I would like to know why Whitman album 9023 has no provision for 1973 Ike's.....?......and why no S's? Are the S coins something different? I know some have a silver content that are higher value but it has me wondering especially when I see 1973's and D's listed right along with all the rest. Thanks in advance. If you haven't guessed, I'm a novice...

My guess would be because the 1973 Ikes were not minted for circulation, and were only available to collectors in the mint sets that year (incidentally, the first year they were available as such). As many of the mint sets have since been broken up, it's not impossible--though not common--to find 1973 Ikes in circulation...I've pulled 1973 P, D, and S (clad proof) all from circulation within the last year or so.

S holes are probably not included in the Whitman folder because, again, S minted Ikes were not made for circulation. They only made the silver uncirculated and proof coins and the clad proofs. If it makes you feel any better, they also left out holes for the Type 1 Bicentennials from both mints. Space was probably also a concern since they crammed the Ikes and SBA dollars into the same album and there wouldn't have been enough space to include anything more than they did.

I looked at sample pages for the album you mentioned and, interestingly enough, they DO include holes for the 1981 SBA dollars, which were also only available in the mint sets. They include S mint holes because in 1979 and 80, San Francisco did mint them for circulation, with 1979-S being more common than 1980-S.

If you're interested in putting together a set of Ike dollars, I would recommend Dansco album #7176. This is what I have my Ikes in. It also includes holes for the uncirculated S minted coins in the years that they made them. And the Type 1 Bicentennials too. It's a bit more money than the Whitman folder, but so very worth it!

The Dansco 8176 has provisions for proof issues as well, if that's what you're looking for.

And most of us here will tell you to always go for albums versus folders when possible. The Whitman 9023 is a folder. The Dansco 7176 & 8176 are albums. The equivalent Whitman Ike album is 9131.

I like Whitman and Dansco equally and use both, but I think there's a general opinion on this forum that Dansco albums are the best.

Oh, and !

More great information CelticKnot and I completely understand what you are saying. You folks are several tiers above me in the level that you collect. Like Pro vs rookie. I'm really just starting over and trying to get the Grandson interested. I think an album that has too many empty spots would be discouraging for both of us. Thanks again.

Nickels_rule,

Another adage here is "collect how and what YOU want to collect". There's no right or wrong way but you can certainly get a lot of suggestions and opinions here! I hope your grandson catches the collecting bug and that you both have fun with it however you decide to build your collections.

Yep, understood....A step in ANY direction is a start eh? I do appreciate the more comprehensive collections but have to remain objective as well. Kind of strike a balance between the two. I started him with a State Quarter map with the spaces for 1 State Quarter in each state. So he's learning about history, geography along with the coin aspect of it. So far he has been enjoying it. Me too, so I got the two spaces for each.......challenging for me although most here do uncirculated rolls for each! But hey, I get it......
