Welcome to the "Days of" thread for the classic US commemorative series!

We will be devoting a single day to each type (and major variety) based on the chronological order of their authorization/release. We'll work through the silver commemoratives first then circle back around for the gold coins. For coins issued in multiple years, all will be eligible on the day their design type is celebrated.

The full calendar is listed below - it kicks off on Wednesday, September 24th.

To spice things up a bit, I will be building in a few "Wild Card Wednesdays" that will be theme-based and not restricted to a single design type. No worries if coins are duplicated on these days! Some themes will include issues already covered, some will focus on future releases and others will pull from the past and future! The theme for each will be announced on the prior Sunday.

Also eligible for posting will be official "cousins" for each issue. Have an official badge from the Pan-Pac Exposition? Show it off! Have a commemorative medal issued by the same committee that sponsored the coin? Bring it on!

The rule here is that these "cousins" are restricted to official items related specifically to the coins. So, for example, a generic medal that features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln would not work as a "cousin" for the day celebrating the 1918 Illinois Statehood / Lincoln half dollar, but an official medal issued by the Maryland Tercentenary Commission would work just fine when we look at the 1934 Maryland coin!

Also eligible will be "black cabinet" pieces (i.e., counterfeits). Display of such pieces along with genuine coins will be a great way to educate folks on what to look for as they build their classic US commemorative coin collections.

A big "Thanks!" goes out to nickelsearcher for reviewing my draft plan for the thread and for offering insightful comments.

See you on Wednesday!

Well stated Commems to kick off this hopefully educational and tremendous fun thread ...

Likely to be the greatest ever assemblage of classic silver commemorative photos ever displayed at the CCF (or anywhere for that matter).

Many Thanks to you for volunteering your time to host the thread ... your continued contributions in this sub-forum are amazing, valued and appreciated.

I have printed your schedule of days ... have my photos ... ready for kick-off.

Readers are likely to view a few honestly worn commemorative from me. :)

2) Help raise funds to stage the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago

Net Mintages:

1892: 950,000
1893: 1,548,300

Quick Fact: First US commemorative half dollar

Here's a link to one of my prior posts on the coin and its "cousins": https://goccf.com/t/130118

Here's my 1892 Columbian. The coin has strong cartwheel luster on both sides, plus a bit of color that points to its originality.

Here's one of the official souvenir medals that were struck by the US Mint at its exhibit booth at the Exposition.

Here's an example of the coin housed in a souvenir holder produced by Wells Fargo. The company purchased several thousand of the coins and gave them to its employees in these custom-printed holders.

Hooray! We are off to a great start! I have a few examples of this initial USA commemorative half dollar.

1892 Columbian Exposition Half Dollar - PCGS MS66/CAC

1893 Columbian Exposition Half Dollar - PCGS FR02

Looking forward to all the examples.

Edit to add some commentary on the circulated coins ... as a devoted collector of these historical coins in honestly circulated state, I thought it might be instructive to offer some insights relative to market availability based on my over 5-years of searching for them.

The 1892/1893 Columbian Exposition half Dollar is readily available in most circulated grades. A quick search of ebay shows a nominal 50/50 distribution between circulated and MS examples.

A nice VF range example can be acquired at a nominal premium over bullion value.

The PCGS population report of certified examples attest to this abundance, with 1,840 certified circulated examples (both dates combined) and 227 examples certified XF or lower in grade. Both of those population statistics are the high water mark for the entire classic silver commemorative series in circulated condition.

PCGS has certified two 1893 as PO01 (no PO01 from 1892). My FR02 example shown above is population 13, with the 2 PO01 graded lower.

This coin is a great way to start the journey towards a circulated set!
