Cool find ...but not mine
Working at the coin shop this morning, a guy walks in,
and pulls this out of his pocket (I put it in the flip for him)

He asked "what is this"
Cool-Coin-Star-Find

The man told me he was dumping 700 quarters into the coin star, at WinDixie,
it told him to check the reject bin, with his reject quarter he pulled
out. 1/10th oz. gold eagle.

He was not trying to sell it, just wondering what it was.

Why doesn't this happen to me

Holy guacamole! I can't begin to contemplate the possible story for how this ended up where it did.

Thieves and/or heirs probably. Just dump the jar and let's go!

I've had to work through a number of estates that involved coins in the last few years and it is an unfortunate truth that the majority of 20-40 year olds simply have no interest in "old stuff". I'd even take it to the point of saying that if they need to learn something, even if that would only takes a few hours, they'd rather dump "grandpa's junk" than spend that brief time learning even the basics about the possible value.

Not true of everyone in that age range, of course, but there are a surprisingly large number who do fall into that "don't care" category.

I wonder if Coin Star goes through their coins to see if they receive anything with numismatic value, but that would be a lot of coin to sort again.

Geese. That's a pretty crazy find. Or he could be a numismatist trolling you guys. I just don't see how this could be spent.
