During WWII French had the "Etat Francais" (Vichy) Coins and the "Republique Francaise" coins..

Maybe this 50 Centimes Vichy coin is 'damaged' by the 'resistance' during WWII.. The pricked letters in the Axe can only stand for R(epublique) F(rancaise) I think..

Any opinions are welcome on this nice piece of history..

Very cool! But how about "Résistance française?"

I'd say it would be a "Republique Francaise" vandalism. Covert propaganda from a sympathiser.

It reminds me of the British coins of the 1980s found with "IRA", or Irish coins with "UDF". Though being caught distributing them in Vichy France would probably have attracted a much stiffer penalty.
