Hello! Today I received a 1979 US mint set in original government packaging, although I ordered a 1979 proof set. The proof set was the inexpensive SBA dollar. Should I send the mint set back for a proof set or keep the mint set?

The Mint Set has P and D mints, the Proof Sets have the S mint, which do you want? I have both.

Depends which you like. They are worth about the same, with the mint set having a higher face value. If you keep the mint set, check it out good to make sure the coins do not have the typical green haze on them.

They have different finish. Proofs are mirrored and mint sets are regular coins like you'd see circulating. Value is similar.

Get all three sets for 1979 and that way you don't have to worry. Mint set, proof set, SBA set... 3 sets that year, and you have it all.

I would keep the mint set, about a million less in mintage (not including all the sets that have been cut up to fill albums), P&D Susan B Anthonys. Chance of the more valuable wide rim version.
The proof set had a million more and people are a lot less likely to crack these for album, but you also have the chance of finding a type II set which is worth a lot more.

I learned something new today, Ratio411. I never knew there was a three coin SBA set. Sure enough, I found several on ebay, OGP and all.

I thought about getting the 3-SBA set, since I am working on a SBA date/mm set. Ended up using the standard 1979 mint set (which I needed for the halves anyway) for the P&D, and adding the S from circulation, since those are common. Got my Wide Rim SBA from circulation too!

Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

JBuck, I learned something too... I thought the 3 coin SBA set was the only way to get uncirculated SBAs in 1979... But apparently this is not the case. Others in the thread are talking about the SBAs in their mint sets, so I guess they came there too. I thought SBA sets of 79/80/81 were due to the SBA not being in the mint set.

Interesting. I never thought much about it. I just assumed they were included in the mint sets to replace the Eisenhower dollars, like they did with the proof sets (the 1979 proof set being the best example of not planning ahead).

The 79 mint set has the SBA in it but only the P and D. It doesn't have the circulation S mint SBA. The 1980 and 81 sets do have all three.
