ilikeikes Pillar of the Community United States 1205 Posts	Posted 03/02/2015 1:12 pm Hi..I'm trying to find a master list of known Varieties(not errors) for the Mexican Libertad Series..any one point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Being a long time variety collector, it seems like possibilites for finds, and, maybe new finds. I just Bought Don Bailey's New Mexican Coinage Book, VOL I, from Amazon..this should be very educational and informative. denco7 Pillar of the Community United States 2543 Posts	Posted 03/02/2015 2:32 pm Since I mainly (for now) collect 1oz BU Libertads, both raw in a Dansco and graded for a registry set, I mainly only know 1oz varieties. 1987 DDO, the yet unconfirmed 1988 with edge lettering, and the 1991 Type II mule with 1992 obverse and the proof style reverse. The Don Bailey volumes are definitely your best bet. denco7 Pillar of the Community United States 2543 Posts	Posted 03/02/2015 6:34 pm It refers to the cactus under the eagle's left claw and the number of dots on it. Up until 1991 the BU versions always had 7 dots on the cactus, the proof versions, always had 8 dots. In 1991 about 1.6 million 1oz BU Libertads were minted however some coins started to show up with 8 dot reverses, similar to the proof versions but without the prooflike finish. No one knows why or how many were minted, but they are as scarce (or more) to come upon as the 1998's which are the lowest mintage of the series. These have become to be known as the 1991 Type II. Proof Libertads were first issued in 1983 when less than 1000 were minted (lowest) and then minted again in 1986 when 30,000 were minted (highest). They always had 8 dots on the cactus. This all changed in 1993 when the BU versions and the Proof versions all of a sudden went back to seven dots. Then of course the whole series was redesigned in 1996. All the 1991 proofs had 8 dots, I don't think or know why that would be a variety. I have never heard of that coin as a variety. Report this Post to the Staff

If I recall, there were 50,000 1991 libertad 5 piece sets. The fractionals all have the same lettering as the 1 oz piece (OnZa instead of onza). My guess is there are about 50,000 of the T2 1 oz coin. @ilikeikes here is a list of the varieties I have been able to put together... BU 1 oz 1982 DD 1982 TDO (NON COMPETITIVE?) 1987 DD (easily identified by the doubling of the decimal before the purity) 1988 DD (same as 87, though apparently much rarer--just discovered recently) 1990 PL (Do we consider this a variety, or just a lucky strike?) 1991 T2 type font is OnZa (as opposed to onza) 1999 Mule (reverse of 2000) Proof 1oz 1983 DDO 1983 TDO 1987 Plain Edge 1987 Lettered Edge 1987 Missing Feather (under Angel's left wing, viewer's right) Lettered Edge 1989 999 (no decimal in purity) 1989 .999 (decimal in purity) (Does anyone know which one is more rare?) Hidalgo Valued Member United States 216 Posts	Posted 08/03/2018 2:34 pm There are so many 1 ounce Libertad silver varieties. Most seem insignificant (e.g., an extra dot). Reminds me of varieties such as the Atheist Lincoln Cent, "Superman" Washington quarter, Bugs Bunny Franklin half dollar, etc. These varieties, are "novelty" coins and do not generate widespread collector interest. What are the MAJOR Libertad varieties that most collectors would want in their collections? I would presume that if there is a "slot" for them in a coin album, they would generate a lot of demand and interest. Report this Post to the Staff
