Joy123 New Member United States 8 Posts	Posted 10/30/2007 7:58 pm Hi, Looking for answers for I have no clue although I do believe these may not be the real thing. We have 2 wine tasters which both appear to have an old coin in the bottom of them. I do believe they are plated for there is a tinge of a brassy color coming through. What do you think? Real or fake? Thanks so much for you help. t360 Pillar of the Community United States 2703 Posts	Posted 10/30/2007 9:03 pm Since it is heavily plated, it is hard to be sure if the 1648 French ecu (or half-ecu) of Louis XIV is a real coin. Much of the detail is obscured by the thick layer of metal coating. For comparision, here is real unplated one. Even if there is a real coin in there, since it is plated, it has little numismatic value. Report this Post to the Staff
t360 Pillar of the Community United States 2703 Posts	Posted 10/30/2007 9:10 pm If there is a brassy color coming through, then it is surely an imitation coin. An original coin would be solid silver which would not have a brassy base metal coloring. Report this Post to the Staff
swamperbob Pillar of the Community United States 5362 Posts	Posted 10/30/2007 10:56 pm I have seen several similar items using what appear to be 8R coins from Mexico. In all cases I have seen the "coin" is actually a copy made for the purpose. I believe that is what you may have here. There are numerous "coin" images on old glass and metal vessels. These really fall on the fringe of numismatics - like jewelry copies made not for circulation but as more utilitarian objects. Report this Post to the Staff
