How do you guys collect your coins. As a new collector I have very few coins, maybe 3-4 coins. I was wondering how do you guys find your coins (am a broke college student) beside just looking at pocket change. Is it a good idea to go to the bank and get rolls of coins and go through them and then take the coins back. I am interested in all input.

Welcome to the forum kmaldona.

If your serious about collecting, you can learn a lot here.

Your question is far reaching, but the answer can be found by reading through the many posts on this forum.

From circulation you can probably assemble a decent set of Statehood Quarters, Jefferson nickels, and 1959 to date Lincoln cents.

Buy a RedBook if you don't have one already.

Have fun!

Some people like coin roll hunting, if you have the time and inclination (if you think of it as a fun hobby and not work). You also need to make nice with some bank workers who won't mind what you're doing (buying rolls and then returning the unwanted change). Sometimes people can find silver coins in bank rolls from time to time.

My recommendation would be to visit a coin show in your area - you can see a lot, learn a lot, and hopefully compare prices and find some good deals.

You can't beat collecting at face value as has been mentioned. Build some circulated modern sets to get familiar with condition, strike, etc. This will help when you have more money to spend. Collect what you like, there are no rules.

I read that you are at Purdue. I was born in South Bend so I am, of course, an Irish fan.

Enjoy and learn.

Welcome to the forum and the hobby! I second the statement that you can get quite a bit of knowledge/advice from this forum. If I had to give guidance on how to start, I would put together some circulated sets. It is easy, fairly cheap and allows for a sense of accomplishment. Actually, I still put together modern circulated sets in Whitman folders for the enjoyment. Above all, start slow and ask questions. Folks here, myself included, will help if and when we can! Welcome!

I suggest collecting a bit of everything that you find interesting and then seeing if there is anything you want to focus on. Starting from pocket change is both easy and affordable way to go. You might also go to a coin shop or coin show if they are nearby - often the dealers there collect as well and will give you some good ideas and inspiration. Also look at as many coins as possible - in hand and online - when you start focusing on a series. Experience is the best guide and looking is a lot of fun!

Enjoy and welcome aboard!

I used to search circulated Wheat Cents. Finally found a nice variety RPM. 1956-D # 1. I asked about value for it and it was $2.50. But in BU grade the same coin would be worth $25. So Stopped looking at the dirty, dinged, scratched circulated and moved up to BU roll searching. I bought all my BU tubes and OBW rolls I could get my hands on. I figure why spend the time of a circulated coin, when you for a few buck more can get BU coins. When you find a variety or go to sell the rest of the roll, there is always a market for them. So now, I mainly buy BU rolls. I need to go back over my rolls again before I sell them. Because during searching you train your eye, it is good to go back over to see what you missed the last time around because new knowledge or new varieties may have been found since or last look. I always look at Cents I get in change and a few times bought a box or two of circulated Memorial Cents. But find little there. I did find a very nice 2002-D Doubled reverse. But the older OBW rolls are my favorites.
