"Discovery follows discovery, each both raising and answering questions, each ending a long search, and each providing the new instruments for a new search." -- J. Robert Oppenheimer
Those fakes are terrible and easy to spot. I've seen at least three. The new security details are nothing more than laser engraving, which on a worn coin means nothing. If they made coins holographic like the polymer bills they would have more success, but it's an expensive process. If I were head of the mint I would have all 5 and 10 cent coins made of silver and the rest out of nickel again. They really aren't trying by making them out of steel and plating - it's lazy and cheap, just like criminals.
A few days ago I contacted the Royal Canadian Mint via their website. Still waiting to hear back from them. I was asking why the Specimen toonies do not have the security features as their circulation counterparts do.
I think the security features are a good idea as well as the removal of older loonies and toonies. Look at UK their 1 Pound coin has so many different types of fakes. Fakes that are so good they work in vending machines.
