Does a "PL" marking on a ring mean platinum, or not?
I bought a ring at a garage sale that has a "PL" marking. A web search has resulting in varying opinions such as:
A. Good marking for 95% + Platinum, along with Plat, PT, etc.
B. Paladium, a lighter and less valuable precious metal
C. A variation of "P" for Plumb, assuring full karat purity,
for example a full 14K for gold, rather than 13.5 being sufficient. (this does not appear relevant to my ring as "PL" is the ONLY marking, and it appears to be either platinum or silver, not gold, with no karat or fineness number. Its weight (heavy) and sound when lightly dropped (high pitched ring like 90% or sterling silver) seems to me to be either platinum or sterling silver. I believe it is platinum, but of course I want to know for sure)
D. None of the above, with no explanation given as to what "PL" might mean
Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Any pictures, is it the right color?

I'm curious, I hope you find your answer.

The color on my ring looks right to me, like silver, only a bit brighter. It weighs 8.7 grams. My wife is taking it to her jeweler for an opinion.

Verdict: it is not platinum, I also tested it for silver, it is not sterling silver either. Perhaps "PL" just means plated. At least it only cost $1
Some good news: I found a ladies watch marked unmistakably 14K (just the watch, not the band) for $2. About 2 grams worth of 14K gold ($35-40 in scrap) Sorry no pics, watch was not working, and missing glass cover etc. I have disassembled it - removed band, opened it up for gold portions on top and bottom etc. Test for 14K checks out :-)

I know you already got the answer, but in my (little) experience; if its gold it will have the karat stamped, if its sterling it will have that stamped, if it's stainless or tungsten it will be stamped or "printed"... my platinum ring says nothing. I don't know if it's because it was custom made, but I can't recall a time I've seen a ring say platinum on it in a jewelry store.

Are you positive the ring isn't white gold? it's probably the pics, but it looks like it has a yellowish tint. But seeing the underside, it doesn't look like most gold rings. I have a similar style ring in 18k and they tend to make sure all surfaces are smooth because people want perfection

thanks Bullion Pirate, I will test it for gold, though I think my wife's jeweler would have said if it was gold. Worth a try

platinum isn't measured in karats, it's measured in purity (.85-.999) so my guess is you have an 18kt white gold ring that's plated in platinum or most of the ring is 18kt white gold with another part made out of platinum, couldn't know without seeing it... as for WL it is the manufacturers mark.
