Personal opinion: I'm with jbuck all the way. If you can't see it with a 10X loupe, it can't be worth spending money on.

@coinfrog. I'm not in it for that though. I want something I can take pics through and that I can easily see. Loupes really hurt my eyes too.

I bought one of the junky $15 ones off of ebay, and it more than meets my needs. It comes with more software than I'll ever learn to use. |

Some time back I purchased a microscope that is ment to hook up to a computer. I tried it once. It worked great. Put it back in the box and it still sits there. Just couldn't figure out what to look at with it.

Do you have any sample shots with that scope, Parklane64? Any issues with it?

It bears mentioning that the 2MP sensor in Parklane's rig is likely the same as in the more expensive Amscopes SSK has posted; the only difference is likely the quality of the optics. Quality optics is not cheap.
2MP means no ability to downsize before posting - too small an image - and therefore you have to maximize the optical quality of the image because you don't get the apparent sharpness increase from downsizing a much larger image.
Scopes like these are absolutely serviceable instruments, and those who call themselves happy owning one have good reason to be happy. I'm just kinda spoiled by knowing how cheap it is to be far, far better at imagery. $400 or $200 plus your dSLR is all it takes to be as good as any photographer posting at CCF, at any magnification, as long as you don't mind becoming an expert. A dozen members or more have already learned this and are posting the images we all envy.

Oh, so much to learn and so little available time! But, editing a numismatic newsletter, good images are important. Is either a Nikon D300 or Sony A57 somewhat easily adaptable for scope-like images?

I've been reading this and thread and I figured to incluse a USB microscope in my 'to buy soon' list.
To inspect details on coins I'm using now a jeweler's loupe, but it gives me headache if looking through it more than a couple of secods at time ... May have to do something with quallity, maybe it's just me ... It doesn't feel healthy eather way.
