What microscope is the best for searching for varieties? Or witch one do you use? The one I am using has disadvantages.

What are you using and what don't you like about it. Also what price range are you thinking? John1

Quote: Microscope? If I cannot see it with a 10x loupe then it is of no concern to me. If you really need to see enlarged details enough to use a microscope, why not just use more powerful magnifiers. They are made with powers all the way up. I've seen some with 20X. I just use a typical 5X or 10X. Other than that, I really don't care what is there.

With a USB microscope, you easily can see images on a computer screen (instead of through a loupe) and can easily photograph enlarged/magnified images for posting on CCF for all to enjoy I also find a USB microscope easy to use to "go down the line" to examine for error/variety a bunch of a particular date that I've pulled out in CRH and lined up. Otherwise I have to pick up each coin and look at it through my {{admittedly small and requiring a squint}} loupe. And the price is right for a usable USB microscope.

A decent microscope will cost you more than the photography system we teach here in the Photography Forum, and our system includes all of a microscope's capabilities as a subset of what it can do. If you already own a dSLR capable of tethering you can cut the cost to less than $200 for a system capable of shooting anything from full slabs to microscopic detail, at professional quality. Just sayin'.

Yep, I've got a $800 Amscope/camera setup sitting here collecting dust because my camera blows it away in quality and ease of use.

You will want the optional stand to go with it. That type of scope is really cumbersome without it.
