Part of my collection consists of the complete series of modern
issues from cents to dollars.I filled them back to 1960 with
mint sets that I cut up and placed in Dansco albums.
Before 1960 I bought them individually in ms-60 or better.
I guess the coins in the mint sets grade about 63.
When you all filled your modern sets did you buy
mint sets or shop around for the best individual coin you could find?
Just wondering.
Thanks

Anything from 1980 (when I started) to present I got from circulation as they came out. A lot of pre-1980 came from circulation as well. Anything I could not find that way I got individually.

Some of the business strike "mint set only" issues I got from mint-sets, but others were individual.

Most of the proofs were from sets I broke apart, since I bought them from the mint somewhat regularly. The rest were purchased individually.

So far most of mine come from circulation as well.
In the near future I hope to buy higher grades

Most of my sets came from circulation as well. I do a lot of roll searching and upgrade as I find better coins. Occasionally, I find a good deal on partial or full mint sets, etc. that I use to upgrade.

For older coin series, I've found an excellent dealer that sells at gray sheet, or if I buy enough, slightly below.

I too have been putting coins in my albums from normal bank issued coins. Every years I go to a bank and buy rolls or bags of cents, nickels, dimes, etc. I go through all the new ones for the best and those go into my albums. I've been doing this for probably about 50 years. However, when I switched to actual albums from folders about 20 or more years ago I ran into the evntual necessity for the addition of proofs. So I buy lots of proof sets and break them all open for my albums. Other than that I stick to coins from the banks.

Mint sets from the 60's to present. For ASE's, I buy a silver proof to put away in OGP but also buy a non-proof for the album. I haven't opened proof sets to put in albums but I'm tempted. I doubt I'll ever open the silver proof sets. Early coins are from shows and local auctions - VF to EF are my goals in early coins but some may have to be lesser graded.

the only "modern" coin I did not pull from circulation was an Indiana State Quarter my son bought me at the coin shop because "It says Indiana and it was cheap so you will like it."
