I've recently been doing some shopping for a 1909 S vdb LWC. I am planning to buy a cent probably in the AU to low MS range, but I'm not in a big hurry and want a problem free variety. I have corresponded with the seller of the this coin:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1909-S-VDB-...OCOR:US:1123

and though I like the looks of the coin, it is really hard to do a full inspection of it with the provided pictures. He has provided additional pictures as well, but they are similarly difficult to fully see/examine the coin. The seller has also mentioned that ICG routinely undergraded coins in this era... thoughts? Also what price point would be a good deal for this coin, given the level of uncertainty?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Since he doesn't offer returns, I'd stay away from it. There are plenty other 09 s vdb's out there.

I would take a look at ebay Sold / Completed listings for comparison.

A quick look told me that you could probably get a somewhat higher grade coin in a more mainstream slab for around the same money. For example, I saw a nice PCGS AU55 for right around that same price point. For just a little more - $1400 to $1500 range, you could get into a big 3 (PCGS, ANACS, NGC) slabbed coin in the MS62BN range.

ICG is not the worst in my opinion, but this coin is pretty pricey for an AU50 in a non top tier slab.

Imo, ICG tends to overgrade, rather than under grade Memorial cents. I do not know if that holds, however, for wheats. On another note, almost any cell phone can take better pictures these days than the seller is showing. A high end coin like this (especially with a no return policy) should have better pictures.

Thanks for the thoughts! I did not notice the "no returns" policy and the humidifiers and safe is interesting/strange. Through some conversations the price point has come down to about $1000 now as well, but I do like the guidance to stick with one of the big three TPGs.
Rest in Peace
