Hi all, as posted over in the other forum:

https://goccf.com/t/240538

I decided last night to remove these coins from the adhesive strips on the card for more proper storage. The bottom row popped off beautifully, but the top row took tons of sticky residue and even some paper with them. The tape residue has to go.

Is acetone safe for these coins, or would I be better off giving them the ancient coin treatment of a nice, long soak in distilled water or olive oil?

I think that acetone would perhaps change the patina, depending on how long the tape was there, the oil would be a better option in my opinion.

Acetone will not change the patina. It may change how the coin looks like, but that's because the metal has aged differently under the tape. When you remove the tape residue, you see its actual colour.

Acetone won't hurt. I'm so not sure about using water, Chinese coins are made of iron as far as I know it and it might get rusty.

Acetone has worked terribly on my copper coins! It changes the color, and not in a good way.
Rest in Peace

Could you post some pictures and tell us about your method using acetone.

@SlurExe: Song dynasty coins were made of iron, but I am pretty sure that they had switched to bronze by the Qing dynasty.

I am probably going to try acetone on the Shunzi issue first--that one is the roughest and is barely legible even on the obverse. Based on that outcome, I may try a different approach for the remainder.

Acetone, yes.
It just removes crud.
If the toning changes that's because the crud was removed.

Olive oil, no.
It's acidic and WILL change/remove the toning.

Must disagree. I have treated hundreds and hundreds of coins with PV olive oil over 40 years and have never seen the toning change in any way.

It's possible for acetone to turn into acetic acid (not in high concentrations, obviously) in the presence of light and turn red mint state copper purple, but only in industrial amounts. SPP-Ottawa linked a paper about this in one of his posts, I will go find it when I'm not on mobile.

Interesting, thanks. I was talking about circulated coins ( LWC), but many with strong partial red. I have never found a reason to treat a clear BU coin with olive oil, so I do not have an opinion on this per se.

Sorry for interrupting the discussion!

Here is the paper: http://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...468601003590

I tried logging in through my Uni, but it keeps coming back invalid. I can't see the full paper now, which is strange since I was able to last year.
