I noticed this a while back in Los Angeles, but as I traveled I noticed that every self checkout CVS machine had this same image claiming to accept 20 cent coins. Oops. Edited by Mayflower2020 10/05/2015 04:09 am

No, 20 cent coins are NOT legal tender in the US anymore. from the Wayback machine store of US Mint website from **broken link**Cent, Nickel (five cents), Dime, Quarter, Half, and Dollar. Those are the coins the mint currently authorizes as legal tender. (that's what the lady on the phone at the mint told me, right wrong, or indifferent) ok the BBCode on here is jsut completely trashed for some links

20 cents means (2) Dimes. That's it.

Quote: No, 20 cent coins are NOT legal tender in the US anymore. I already asked that question to the CCF classic community and I got a clear 'yes' from the community. It is apparently, the link you posted doesn't say anything about the legal tender status of US coins but the formatting might have messed it up, what do I know. https://goccf.com/t/217331The denominations the MINT consider legal tender is a de facto definition, it's just their consideration. The coins you mention are all currently being produced and are considered circulating coins. Bullion coins, are they not legal tender then, by that definition?

It is probably because the machines are used around the world and most countries use a 20 cent (or equivilent) piece not a 25.

Yeah, I suppose that's it; it's a general, worldwide image. On the other hand, when I was trying to explain the coin system of US to a coworker, she said I'm making it up. "25c cent coin, yeah right!" :) We just get really stuck in our own habits / systems.

Shadz, the Coinage Act of 1965 makes all US coins legal tender. This includes the Half Cent, Two Cents, and yes, the Twenty Cents coin. Do not confuse what the mint is authorized to make with what is defined as legal tender. For those who cannot get Shadz link, copy-paste... ht tp://web.archive.org/web/20110611122411/ht tp://www.usmint.gov/faqs/circulating_coins/?action=faq_circulating_coin

I am a cashier and if somebody was paying with anything like this I would gladly accept them!

WE would, but cashiers won't even take half dollars, think they would believe a 20 cent coin was real not fake? Some sadly think a $2 bill is fake cause they don't see it all the time!
Cashiers just sadly aren't educate in pieces of money, just how to quickly get a customer out of the way to TAKE their recognized money and move on to the next. Grocery store earlier I was asked if I wanted fries with my purchases, then the girl apologized cause she though she was at her other job already.

I wonder if the machine would actually take an old 20 cent coin? Unfortunately I don't have any so I can't check. Any volunteers?

If you're out of 20 cent coins to try, how about ten 2 cent coins?

It's good that cashiers arent all educated about money. Otherwise I wouldn't have got a few of my silver dimes back as change and would have far less wheat pennies.

Whenever they do that, tell them to call you when they see something fishy.
