While at McD's last week, I avoided the drive-thru and got some exercise walking into the store.

As a coin collector, I tend to carry more change than the average person.

I placed my order and pulled out a pocket of change to cover the cent portion of my bill.

The gal ask what the big quarter was. I pointed to a Kennedy .50, and she said 'no, the big one'. The only big coin I carry is my pocket piece, a silver 1986 Statue of Liberty $ Proof. I pointed to the commemorative and she exclaimed "Yes! That's the one" She then asked if it is real. I told her it is and it has a face value of $1, but it is worth $15. I educated her on clad reeds vs silver reeds, and demo-ed the sound difference between and clad coins. She thanked me for the explanation and I went back to work.

I hope our encounter will make her think of the coins that pass through her register. Hopefully, she'll buy the old coins as she comes across them. And start building her coin empire.

My son works for a independent burger stand, and has brought home some nice silver coins and star notes. He did come across (10) 1976 $2 bills in sequential order. These bills are in super-crisp condition, like it was their first journey out of the wrapper. These bills are now in my protective protection.

It always feels nice to educate people at least a little bit about coins- it means a few less coins that might be cleaned in the future and a few more that might be rescued from circulation. They may even take up collecting.

at this point I think you mean "1986 Statue of Liberty $ IMPAIRED Proof" w/ PMD, if it is a pocket piece. I can't figure out how it was in an air-tite if you were able to explain the reeds?

Did you tell her where to get her own ASE?

Sounds like a good way to get someone hooked

@cascade, truthfully, if I did not have $50 cash with me, my answer would have been the same one the cashier gave. I was actually in that same boat a long time ago--out of the blue, a customer handed me an old colonial era 8 reale coin and tried to trade it for a $20 credit off his groceries. I declined not because I was an idiot, but because his story didn't sit right with me, and I had neither time nor resources to wager 3 hours' work on what could be a reproduction.
