@atticguy the current releases are sold at dbl face from the mint, so just from that they are worth more the face value. Once you take into account shipping/ebay/paypal fees (when selling) 4x face is actually a good deal IMO. I personally would sell them closer to 5-6x face and I'm really not making much money on it.

Quote: the last 50 cent coin intended for circulation was the 2002 jubilee coin, however someone's brilliant idea to circulate these was to give them to the post offices, not the banks And Laura Secord shops at double issue price, plus tax. At least they came with nice packaging.

You can order early in production year from Winnipeg mints bulk order department, but shipping is kind of expensive along with a flat service charge

I was just thinking the other day, when was the last time I actually saw a 50c piece in circulation? I'm certain it was as a child in the late 1970's when I received one in change from a dollar bill I'd spent buying a kite. Anyone else remember the last time they saw one in circulation?

As my memory serves me, banks had them, or could get them till the late 1980's; My brothers and I started getting allowance in the late 80's, and my dad would get them from a local bank; The older of my two brothers and I would each get a silver dollar, and my youngest brother would get a fifty cent piece.
I ended up "buying" them all from my brothers.
I continued my fifty cent piece collection by getting them directly from the mint.
As far as I have been told by bank managers; Old "withdrawn" bills are required to be removed from circulation - they cannot be re-circulated or sold. Fifty cent and "silver" dollars are collected and sent to the mint(?) for de-minting - but banks can resell them to customers, should the opportunity arise.

I get them from time to time from a dealer friend to recirculate via beer tips. Fity cent pieces also work in most parking meters, which reads them as loonies. I found out by mistake a few years ago.

the banks did stock them as change, but seldom handed them out. I was told they stop when they were discontinued around 2005 I think it was. we can only get them in sets and once a year as roll with special wrapping now. mintage is 25000. now just last month I cant get the tellers to pole out old bill from the safe any more, I can only get the old bill from the tellers if they have them in there drawers. the royal bank did let me see all the old bill and pick from them be for there send them off the the bank of Canada

I'm able to buy the old dollars and 50 cent coins sometimes when banks have them. No one circulates them or hands them out unless you specifically ask. I'll try asking if they can be ordered, but I doubt it. Several weeks ago I found a 1967 silver half among a big batch I picked up. Not sure how previous handlers missed it but happy day for me. Normally it is a skunk.

Love the Canadian half. Quote: I was just thinking the other day, when was the last time I actually saw a 50c piece in circulation? When I was a kid in the 80's the COE (Central Ontario Exhibition) used to set up in the local arena parking lot and we would go every year. One of the games there was the Birthday Game. You place a token on your month of choice and the carny rolled an oversized 12-sided die. If it landed on your month you won. The 'tokens' were 50 cent pieces. I knew what they were because my old man collected but I had never seen them in the wild outside of that.

I'm over 50 and don't recall ever seeing a 50 cent coin in circulation in Canada, including the 2002 that apparently had over 14M minted.

If you find the right bank they will save these for you, I pay face value and my bank has a big bag of these 50¢ coins. No silver but probably every non silver year. Iv never seen them in circulation. Same with the pre loonie 1$ coins. Also just realized this is a very old post lol.

Wrekkdd; don't worry, a topic like this needs updates now and then to see if any changes have occurred. Personally, I am very happy to hear that I might be able to actually visit Canada in the near future.
