Love the Canadian half. Quote: I was just thinking the other day, when was the last time I actually saw a 50c piece in circulation? When I was a kid in the 80's the COE (Central Ontario Exhibition) used to set up in the local arena parking lot and we would go every year. One of the games there was the Birthday Game. You place a token on your month of choice and the carny rolled an oversized 12-sided die. If it landed on your month you won. The 'tokens' were 50 cent pieces. I knew what they were because my old man collected but I had never seen them in the wild outside of that.

I'm over 50 and don't recall ever seeing a 50 cent coin in circulation in Canada, including the 2002 that apparently had over 14M minted.

If you find the right bank they will save these for you, I pay face value and my bank has a big bag of these 50¢ coins. No silver but probably every non silver year. Iv never seen them in circulation. Same with the pre loonie 1$ coins. Also just realized this is a very old post lol.

Wrekkdd; don't worry, a topic like this needs updates now and then to see if any changes have occurred. Personally, I am very happy to hear that I might be able to actually visit Canada in the near future.

wrekkdd ... Do you belong to the Hamilton Coin Club and, if so, have you been to any meetings? I am/was a Charter member, but no meetings since Covid.

I didn't know there was a club in Hamilton, I just recently got into coins because of covid. Mostly coin roll hunting so far. Though iv cleared out the customer rolls around my work lol. Picked up a machine wrapped roll thinking maybe some good set coins but it is just a whole roll of uncirculated 2020 quarters. I went through them I found one with damage from a coin dropping on it at the mint I assume but it's tiny compared to the picture of the other quarter I posted about. Most of them though are brilliant uncirculated I think. I'll research the coin club hwre

Back in the 70s and 80s traveling throughout Canada there were a couple times I had to inform tellers that, yes, Canada did make .50 coins! It was very hard to get halves or dollar coins back then.

Well, for a long time the 50 cent coins were used in parking meters because the meters thought that they were loonies. Then, about 3-4 years ago, the meters were upgraded so that no longer worked.

I think 50 c is a good denomination for the 21st c. Time to bring them back! I propose the 1870 design with QEII instead of Vic I on the obverse.....

I bought about 20 50¢ pieces all post 1996 from the bank, they are all the same design though. Was hoping to get a missing s but I just found the missing a and I one. Not very rare though.

I regularly buy pre Loonie dollars and 50 cent coins from Canadian banks. You can't order them but they are happy to sell any that get turned in. Very very rarely have I found silver but one time there were a bunch of 50% silver commemorative $1 from the 1970s. Lovely addition to my collection.
