There seems to be some demand for a thread in honor of the lowballs, those solidly wonderful PR1 and FR2 coins that are gaining in popularity. I'll get the "lowball" started... sorry couldn't resist the PUN as bad as it is.

So... for those who find enjoyment in them... post your finds. brag about just how little detail remains in your sample... share your stories of finding them and why they are of interest to you... Biggest premium you ever paid... you get the idea...

Most of all have fun and be nice... because lowballing isn't about getting uptight over coulda/shoulda/woulda for the next grades up. This thread I hope puts some smiles on faces and chuckles in our breaths.

I'll post a pic of my 1903 V nickel that started my collection when I get back from China next week. Its from Grandma, and should pull a solid FR2, might be a PR1 contender there is so little detail remaining.

Glory on homies.

1893 CC VAM-2. Dateless, but VAMed the date based on the CC position. 36 bucks.

Here are some more lows.

SSK , not to burst your bubble but that 93-CC really looks like it was deliberately worn down on both sides of the coin. you can see the abrasion lines clear as day.

I suppose you are right, T-BOP. I ignored those the first time, but I think it is a details coin.

I've never seen an LMC circulated that much.

I guess you may as well post it, although it's ungradable.

This is not technically a lowball (not bought as such - in fact bought as an 1921, believe it or not - and also not graded), but it might as well be one.
As far as I can tell, the grade is somewhere between FR and AG... probably the former.
1923-S Peace dollar.

Took me over a year after the purchase to figure out that it has a mintmark (which actually seems to be more obvious on the photos than in hand).
And of course it's not an 1921... but I thought that since it's under spot, I might as well buy it anyway (and by "under spot", I mean $26 - not my fault that the one time when I actually had big money to spend on coins happened to be April 2011).

I have a Peace dollar as my pocket piece. Hopefully one day it will look like that.

This has to be my only "desirable" lowball. Pretty sure I only paid US$0.03 for it.

I also have some German States and Egyptian silver coins that are almost worn out, but I don't find them desirable in that condition.

Typecoin971793, that V-nickel would grade Crap-00 IMO. :)
