I don't know if I had actually held one before tonight, but I got one back in change from the local QuickTrip and got a little excited. Why, there was no way that the lack of detail was a strike through error and I surely thought there was something sincerely wrong with it.......Yea, there is something wrong.....Perhaps the ugliest design ever to be placed on a US Coin....After years to prepare and many submissions, this is the design they settled for?
I mean no disrespect to Wyoming or any of their fine residents, but that quarter is ugly.(thats my opinion, but like they say...opinions are like--well, everyone has one and they all stink)

I don't disagree that its a very plain design. I grew up 'out west' and I'll tell you that that design is distinctivly Wyoming. It is on the liscence plates, highway signs, bolo ties, belt buckles, back windows, earings, mud flaps, and tatooed on hind ends. When I first saw the design I thought "what other design would they have?" If you have a quarter from New York, what else would you have besides the statue of liberty? If there was one from Colorado, what else would you have besides the mountians? If it was from Utah, what else would you have besides a huge railroad spike? (wait that's not a good example)
Anyway - my point is - its ugly, flat, and boring but its Wyoming.

Compared to all the others it is very plain.
I said something similar to a customer the other day and they told me they lived there and that it is something to do with the state symbol. I think.

Oh, I dont have any problem with the image on the coin, but where is the detail? No horse's mane, no definition on the cowboy, no definition on the horse, no tumbleweed or sagebrush, no dust stirring from the bronco...I mean, it looks like a cookie cutter pattern you would buy to bake Wyoming ginger snaps or something....Its more of a token appearance than anything else.

I actually like the Wyoming quarter...With the exception of Nevada, it might even be my favorite design of all the 50 quarters. Many of the new quarters have way to much going on for them...very complicated, detailed designs that, at least to me, go a little over board. There's a couple quarters (the SI like the simple elegance of the Wyoming coin...I think its a much needed breath-of-fresh-air after so many cluttered designs.

See, I thought the quarter looked like that one with the Wyoming state outline...that looks sharp. Thats why I got excited when I got this one...I thought mine was "broke".

Thats the way the symbol is. It is not ever painted with any details. Its a flat color. That's it. OMG - I just went to look and find some info on it. That symbol is a regestered trade mark of wyoming! TRADEMARK: Bucking Horse and Rider (BH&R) is the federal and state registered trademark of the State of Wyoming (shown left) http://www.codywy.org/wyfacts.htm

And the quarter is about the same way. :D Must be something about the landscape that just drains all the creativity out of people. :) One thing to say in its favor, it wasn't one of the early designs. Still what dos it say about the "contest" whn four of the five finalists are just variations of the same design. Either there were no good designs submitted, or the outcome of the "contest" was predetermined.

At first glance I didn't like it, but I soon changed my mind. I now think it's interesting and unique. The whole idea of having a featureless design on a coin is pretty rare. I like it.
And by the way, the northwest corner of Wyoming is anything but flat and boring. Grand Tetons and Yellowstone are some of the prettiest parts of the country.
And I'm from Texas - I think our quarter could have been better, too. I have noticed that usually the harshest critics of each quarter are from that quarter's state.

I like the simplicity of the design, a nice clean look and not cluttered like some of the rest.. as GFR3 stated

I like it too. If you think the Wyoming quarter is ugly, have you seen the Maryland quarter? BLAH!

I feel that way about many of the designs. It just seems that there was never a real standard for the State Quarters. Some are good and others are really bland. Some are historical and others aren't.
