Few years back I tried to return a coin with a damaged case, could not see in pic and was not revealed in text, and they would not allow ....

In fact Heritage will not allow bid retraction even if plenty of time remaining in auction ..... They will allow you to back your bid down one level but not allow you to retract ..... Pretty much you bid it you bought it ......

Anyone with different experience?

It depends on how you bought it. If you won it on a Heritage Auction, there are no returns and there never have been. If you bought it at a direct price they have a 7 day return period. If you win it on ebay, they allow a 14 day return, I believe, although I haven't won anything from them on ebay for some time, so that might have changed.

I made a mistake on a bid once and they did let me retract it after admonishing me for the error and assuring I understood that it was a "one time courtesy" and would not be allowed again. It was an honest mistake, and I am a small fry to them, but when $1,000 bid is entered on $100 coin it clearly is a mistake and nothing nefarious.

Anyways, with Heritage's new software and rules I don't fish in that pond much anymore.

I was able to return a bust Half Dime that I had purchased through one of their auctions. I forget if the auctions was in conjunction with a show or one of their weekly internet auction. The coin was toned and in a PCGS slab but had a vertical scratch in the field in front of the bust and was more than half the diameter long. You needed to turn the coin about 90 degrees to see the scratch. I asked a HA representative if I could return the coin because the scratch was not visible in their pictures. They allowed me to return it just this one time and refunded my money less, I forget if it was 5 or 10% of the purchase price. They have since pulled the coin from their archives.

Not happy to hear they charged a fee(like restocking deal) when it was a hidden defect. They should have refunded 100% period, IMO. Maybe let you pay for shipping one way but even that is debatable under those circumstances!

I know they are pretty strict so I am careful when I bid with them - not as worried about type-os at ebay.

But they do have some NEGATIVES that others don't. Like exhorbitant shipping fees for no good reason other than to goose their profits more than the 17.5%, 10-14 day shipping( but they expect you to pay immediately and start fining you after like 7 days).

If you sell in their "non-auction make offer to owner" system you wait a full 30 days after they receive the coin before they SEND the check. I realize the buyer has to have time to get it and potentially return it but 14 days should be plenty for that. 30+, BS! Given their punitive requirements for payment they don't reciprocate AT ALL when they owe you.

But just like ebay has its downsides and quirks, many coins that you'd pay near retail for anywhere else get auctioned at decent bargains at Heritage so you have to weigh the negatives vs the opportunities. Plus when you get into the lower pop market they by-far have more coins selling through their auctions than anywhere else! Which for me means I am buying almost 50% of my additions via HA these days.

At Heritage I'm talking Auctions as well as at GreatCollections I once bid 999 when I meant 99 ..... Great Collections allowed me to retract the bid, no problem as long as 24 hours before hammer but if 24 hours before hammer they would only let you retract to next highest bid, which I think is fair!
