Hi, I wish to get some Roman coins and maybe some medieval ones with relatively fast shipping. They don't have to be in perfect condition but I would prefer ones that weren't obliterated almost beyond recognition. Around twenty bucks or less for each would be good. Where are some good places to buy some? Can I trust ebay and if so what sellers would you recommend? Can I just pick one with a high rating?

The traditional place for "safely" buying ancient coins is Vcoins, but I don't know if they work with medieval coins too, and I'm not sure they have much under $20.

If you don't have specific ideas which particular Roman coins you want, another good option is just buying 4th century bronzes from pretty much any seller (that isn't an obvious scam). They're common enough that no one really fakes them, except for the especially rare types (and even most of them are more common real than fake).
[EDIT: Though take care not to pay anywhere near $20 for each - unless they're particularly scarce types, they're supposed to be a lot cheaper.]

Similarly, there are many real and few fake Byzantine anonymous coppers and, to a lesser extent, scyphates in the "medieval" category. I can't think of any other medieval series that is so common (Ivan IV kopeks come close, but they're from the 16th century, so a few decades too late for "medieval").

That said, I never bought any ancient coins online (and the one non-ancient I bought online was from a website that ceased to exist several years ago). And I doubt that "this nice guy near the back of the Vernisage has a nice selection of ancient and medieval coins, though you shouldn't necessarily trust his attribution" would be any helpful in your case, as you're probably not from anywhere close to my city.

Well, I have now a "Joint Venture" with my friend Juan Antonio to sell coins in ebay, but for cheap coins I suppose that there are thousands of "safe" dealers on ebay...
You must look for a dealer that agree in combining several lots to make cheaper the sending...

Unless you have been around ancients for a while I would stay away from ebay. For my money V-coins is the place to go. You will find what your looking for there in just about any price range. Just last week I bought a Byzantine Constans II folles for $6.00.

ebay is ok. I tend to go for un researched coins providing I have a good idea of what they are. Things have changed over the last few years and it seems to have a high level of dealers on there armed with spinks guides selling coins just below or above guide prices. Also look under the metal detecting finds section on there. You get quite a few coins on there. There's a lot of Polish medieval coins turning up on there at the moment but there not my thing. I stick to English hammered mainly. Hope this helps.

stick with vcoins jarwolf, unless you know the seller on ebay (or they are also a vcoins seller). here's search on vcoins of coins 1-20 USD, looks like there are some pretty cool coins in there, some medievals as well.

Frank Robinson out of New York is the definition of an honest dealer and he usually has plenty of different coins under $20.

On V-coins you can find plenty of the low cost bronzes from Nemesis coins, David Connors, Ancient Imports and a few others. Herb, David, and Marc have been in the trade for a long time, and they are all honest people. Others could be name too, but these just came to mind.

As for the remark that you should not have to pay even $20 for most Late Roman Bronze, don't you believe it. It's all about grade. Even common coins in high grade will command a strong price. But believe me, there are plenty of LRB that are worth a LOT more than that, even when they are not in the highest of grades. There are plenty more, however, that are really cheap in grades of good to fine.
