38 mm 50% silver to a 20 mm copper useless

Yes, how the mighty have fallen. That would be as much due to the depreciation of the rand as anything else.

The reason the silver 50 cents were done away was the value of the actual silver in the coins exceeded the denomination of the coins.

This applied to a lot of silver coinage around the world, especially the common wealth countries.

So the problem was not just a South African issue.

Yeah when I was young I use to play with these big coins, never wanted to spend them, loved how big they where, always knew somehow they where more worth than its value
