I love Morgan dollars. I think they are beautiful coins and I read things about them. I just posted a possible counterfeit and noticed it had sold this morning, so I was thinking I was probably wrong. I was hoping that someone could let me know what they think.

The one in question was a 1893 S. With only one obverse die and two reverse dies used to mint that date and mintmark I figured it was easier to learn.

Coin on eBaby had the date shifted to the right from where I understand the correct position to be, but now I wonder if I was looking at it wrong. Is this date placement incorrect? I had drawn red lines between the denticles to show where the 1 falls and this is what I was thinking made the authenticity of the coin questionable.

I think no question that it was a forgery. The one in the date should be squarely over a denticle. There are other markers as well that a buyer should check. This is an easy one... many forgeries are much more sophisticated.

Thanks. I was unable to identify any of the other obverse markers on the coin, but this stuck out. I feel bad because someone got ripped off for $1900. Not small change to me.
Rest in Peace

Clearly a fake based on the date position. Based on the form of the 3, I believe this one was once an 1898-S. Unfortunately, there are a lot of uneducated collectors out there scooping up crap like this one.

Certainly the wrong positioning. If it's a cut 8 or just a plain out forgery is tough to tell from the date only.

The 3 on the 93s is also raised above the other numbers in the date. The example you post has the 3 at the same level.
