I was looking at these, they are both 1990 D but there is two different styles of the designer's initials on the reverse.
Anyone seen this before?

They are from the same master die. The heavy die polishing altered the thin 'FG'.

All the 1990 I have looked at has the thick FG, like the coin on the right. Is the thinning rare?

The letters on the die are tapered. Wider at the base and thinner at the top. That way the coin will release form the die after the strike. After a clash they take the die and polish the fields. (the outside part of the die) when they polish off clash marks are die gouges or damage on the face of the die, the field is reduced. So when this happens several times the devices get shorter because of the missing field depth. When this happens the devices are not a tall as when the die was fresh. So they start to look smaller. So they is no extra premium for this. It is just an event in the dies life that all dies experience. Hope this helps.
