I was mildly suprised to drop a few Presidential dollars in a vending machine the other day and have it work. It's the first I've seen. All the others I run across won't take anything larger than a quarter, not even an SBA. They had a large sign that said "Now Accepting Dollar Coins!"
I'd like to see them circulated more than they are. I try to carry $5 worth in my pocket for tips and such when eating lunch. I went with my old man to a restaurant last Saturday and plonked $7 worth of Geroge Washington and John Adams on the table for the tip. As we were leaving, the busboy started clearing the table and spotted the stack of coins. He picked them up and looked at them very closely. Then he called over a co-worker and showed him the coins. I think they were trying to figure out if there were either real currency or if they had just hit the jackpot and some philanthropist had left them a small fortune (sorry, guys!). The waitress came over and said "oh, those are the new dollar coins!" and smiled at them. Then she snatched them out of their hands and walked away. Ha!
