Hi, I'm new to this hobby I'm starting out trying to assemble a 1959-2007 penny set. So far I have gone through $50.00s or 2 boxes of pennies. Thursday I picked up 2 more boxes to go through for this weekend and it turns out they have already been searched. All the copper pennies, 1981 and earlier have been pulled out. I dumped my first 2 boxes I searched at a different bank than where I purchased the new boxes from.
My question is how often do you get boxes that have already been searched? And, since the banks all get boxes from the same armored car service, in a local area, does it really matter where you get your boxes from or is it just luck?
I did some how manage to find 1 solid copper penny in these 2 boxes of previously searched coins, it was a 1905 :D.. That was a really nice surprise!

I am new at the cent roll searching. Over the last few days I have purchased 75 dollars worth or 7500 Pennies. I have completely searched 1 box and almost through another box and I have found a lot of copper pennies but I am in the middle of two towns and I get from one and dump in the other. From one town to the other is about an 45 min/hour drive So I'm not sure if its just luck or maybe that bank is someones dump bank. I know all banks don't use the same companies to get there coinage from but maybe you can call and ask to speak to the manager of the bank and see where they are getting there supply. Then call another branch and see if it is the same! But I havent had any problem with that yet

Thats a good idea, thanks! I was starting to think maybe everybody was pulling 1981 and earlier pennies out or something. The first 2 boxes I went through a couple of weeks ago had allot of pre81's.

Woolfe: Depending on where you live in the US, you'll either get mostly Philly cents or S and D cents. I have lots of "S" cents laying around, but I don't do albums. If you have a few tough dates, such as 68-S, let me know and I'll give you a few.

Same thing has happened with Boxs from Brinks in soulth texas. They are pulling pre 1982 copper from pennys boxs. I have problems finding old pre 81 copper pennys.
The us government could be removing them like they did silver dimes and quarters in 1967 or 1968. They had machices in those days to remove silver coins . In 1968 they were selling to gsa to be sold as silver bullion.
Your goverment could be doing that again with all pre 1982 copper coins like in old days for silver coins. I was luckey I saved over 17500 copper pennys last year before they did it. Its like all brinks boxes these days are all 1982 thru 2008 zinc pennys.
Copper in bank boxs could be history soon.

We aren't allowed to melt down copper pennies but who said the gov't can't? I think by this time next year it will be very hard to complete a Memorial cent collection exclusively from circulation. The feds are stealing our money! --Gary

A week ago I bought a box of pennies from a different branch of my bank. All the pennies were hand wrapped and contained all Zincolns. This was my first box of zinc pennies. This makes me two for three. -PP

And not only are we not allowed to do these things, many of us do. Same with melting down coinage. In some areas Copper coins are being melted down continuously right along with BORROWED cable and wire. As to coins in rolls. Don't forget those didn't get there from Heaven. Someone just like you looked through those, returned them to a bank, put through a counting machine, put into a rolling machine and presto, now you have them.
