Hi, I'm new to the forum and finally have something worth posting! I still like stalking the boards but this was too exciting!
It's been 14 years since I actively collected coins and so for Family Night tonight, My wife and I picked up some bank rolls. I don't have all the details, we're a bit tired, Grandma saw what we were doing and in the excitement we offered to sort her coins as well. Big mistake. My fingers hurt. The coins kept coming... Overall, Grandma had more silver which is not surprising. She may have had more had gremlins not "visited" the stash. Oh well.
But in our $40.00 worth of bank rolls, we found several silver quarters, nickles, and dimes! There were seven (I think) wheat pennies. And my son spotted the find of the night! 1972D CLIPPED Dime. I'd never seen one before and he wanted to throw it away. I need to learn more about grading, but I'd say it's in very good condition and the clips are very clean. There's also a spot where it looks as though a bit of metal was in the way on the strike. I think I also found a quarter that was offset when it was struck. Are there some guidelines as far as a percentage of the ridge missing etc?
It was a good haul I think and we plan on doing it every Friday night. This came about again when I realized that in 14 years (when my wife and I started collecting as a couple,) we NEVER sold or spent ANY coins we added to our collection. They seem to be too precious to spend.
And, like everyone else we would toss our coins into a jar and would rarely spend it. We can't save money to save our lives, but we do have a tendency to just let coins sit in the jars. "Out of sight, out of mind" I guess! Well I decided to buy rolls as well as save in the bank because it was too easy to tap the savings at any time! Now with online banking I can transfer funds in my sleep! (That's the excuse I give my wife!)
I'll update our find when I regain my strength, hehe... AND PICS! I'll try to have some pics of the "variety." Nice site BTW, my wife found it a few weeks ago when I asked her about grading info since she's a better researcher. We like this site in particular because of the number of active posts, it's very busy, and it is well organised. We likey!

OK, corrections...
The "haul" was more like 7 silver nickels, one silver dime, and 7 wheats. The quarters and 4 dimes were '65.
I've been working on the pics all day, they're uploading now, I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'm working on the pic post.

1972 clipped dime. (It's not a "D" like I thought it was.) The lighting is pretty harsh making the missing bits look angular, but they are actually round. To the left you can see a depression.
 
I was playing with the backgrounds, I like the orange better, it blends nicely with the penny.
 
Wheaties! Far left = 1944S. Top left to right = 1957D, 1944, 1950D. Bottom left to right = 1958D, 1956D, 1956D.
This seems odd to me, the obverse look worn, while the reverse are in much better condition. It's a bit difficult to see due to the pic resolution, but the lines in the wheat are very defined.
 
Silver Nickles! Far left = 1960D. Top left to right = 1964D, 1954, 1964D. Bottom left to right = 1964D, 1964, 1964D.
The mint marks are hard to see because I hurried through these, at this point I was playing with the equipment for nearly four hours trying to get everything "just right." I also didn't account for the date! oops.
 
1984D. Is this an error or not? The ridge on the obverse is very faint on the right and bottom, but not visible at all on the upper left. On the reverse, the ridge is there and very strong. I think it qualifies, so into the collection it goes!
 
1996D, I like this one! The "6" in the date, the top halves of the "LI" in Liberty, "IN" "WE" and bottom halves of the "TR" in trust, and the tops of the "JS" are all barely visible. It's too inconsistant to be wear marks. They look like smudges. Now that's only the obverse! The reverse upper halves of "UNITED STATES OF" it's not strong at all and the "D STA" and "OF" is probably the lowest.
Maybe it's an alien message and we should all put on our tinfoil hats! aaaaargh! |
