I was sorting through some pennies and came across this one. Any idea of what would cause this? Could it have happened at the mint? It almost looks etched except there are some sharp details left.

This seems to resemble a dryer penny I saw in a recent post. A penny that has been caught in a dryer for a few years.

My guess is that it was dug up by somebody with a metal detector then tumbled to remove the dirt and crud.

I agree. There are a couple spots on it that look like it was exposed to moisture and then the corroded spots were removed.
