hello everybody.
i bought this thaler on ebay and I'm trying to figure if it's authentic coin.
weight: 22.18 gr
diameter: 34.5
acording to krause catalog is or KM# 208 or KM# 209.1
the weight suppose to be 16.820 both of them.
at first I thought this is an obvious fake because the weight dont fit but later I found some of those:
http://www.ma-shops.com/pollandt/it...&curr=EURSGD
http://www.ebay.com/itm/GERMANY-ALE...AOSwBLlU25qb
i dont think those are faked but.....
the seller just said it's called Angsttaler and something in german.
what do you guys think?
alexey

That must be a typo. A thaler at 16.8 grams normal reference weight? Nope. It was a standard unit of measurement, which was adjusted over time but in 1849 22.2 was the norm. Even the last of the German thalers in the 1860's up to 1871 were still at 18.5 grams.

Krause has many errors. People just copy from it without checking - I've done it myself. This coin should be just over 22g

Per my catalogue (A.K.S) dealing specifically with german coins of this era, Hannover Talers should weigh as follows:

Period Weight,g Silver Content, % Net Silver content, g

1834 - 1856: 22,272 75% 16,704
1834 - 1840: 16,821 99,356% 16,704
1857 - 1866: 18,519 90% 16,667

The O.P coin belongs in the 1st category. Catalogued as A.K.S 107 in german references.
