OK, I'm gonna post some random scans of miscellaneous coins in this one thread. Unlike the Morgan silver dollars, which were separately wrapped up in a handkerchief, these were all mixed up...in bags, jars, cigar boxes, etc. I've got tons of this stuff I haven't even gone through yet, but posting on this message board has motivated me to drag some of it out and see what I have. And a lot of these coins are in pretty bad condition, but here they are, warts and all. Feel free to offer comments, opinions, and snide remarks.  First of all, I've found about 40 of these half dollars. But only 3 appear to be in decent condition:  Most of them look like this:  I'm guessing only the first 3 would be worth anything above face value, right? |

I've got more of these Mercury dimes than anything else, probably 100 or so, I haven't counted them. Most of them seem to be from the 1940s. Here are the 2 oldest I've found so far. Any particular years I should be looking for?  |

Welcome to the forum Syd...silver prices would tempt me to melt all well worn 1940's halves
and keep the rest on a case by case basis...the first three look to be AU-50's.

Right, I'll give you double face value right now for them....Those coins (the Walkers) are worth a minimum of about 7 dollars each right now- their value as silver coins. There are some better dates that will be worth more, even in circulated (worn) grades. Get yourself a RedBook, it will show you what you have and and give you an estimation of retail value. And DO NOT clean any of them, cleaning can ruin any value they might have above bullion value. Edited by InfiniteInterest

These are the oldest coins I have, that I can make out the date. I've found 8 of these so far, and these 3 are in the best condition. I know they're some sort of old penny because they say One Cent on the back, but that's about it.  |

There's about 50 Buffalo nickles, but most are badly worn and I can't even make out the date. This is one of the better ones.  |

I know the X carved in the face ruined this one, but it's a neat looking coin:  And it looks like somebody drilled a hole in this one, and it was filled in later.  That's all for now, gotta run! |

That's a fun cache of coins you have! Keep your eye out for those 1856 cents with the eagle on them. In any condition they're a nice find! I know someone who found around 8 of these in a collection they bought.  Btw, here's a good source for determining "key" dates, as it gives mintage figures. Edited by KurtS

Syd, if you were me you'd get a Red Book, or check out price, variety, and error guides on line and do at least a rudimentary inventory of your coins. www.pcgs.com has price guides that list key and semi key dates and some varieties and errors and includes price guides (mostly inflated). http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/fmv.shtml provides more accurate values but lists fewer varieties, etc. There are tons of resources on the web if you're willing to use them. I would hate to think you'll let some valuable and/or rare coin slip past you simply because you were not informed. Heck, even if you took the time to list the denomination and dates of each coin here, we could at least point you in the right direction about any unusual coins. Together we can...alone we can, too...the latter, usually less effectively. Jim |
