My hubby came back from the West coast last night and turned out his pockets and said there was change he got while there... got 7 coins for my collection because I was missing a lot of D's. Then it occured to me...
Would living in the center of the country be better for collecting (able to get both D and P mints marks) or does say the Denver mint go to certain states only and the Philadelphia to certain states only. Just a thought.
I have been reading great new topics (haven't checked in a while; I had no idea about the 2009 Mint Sets being so large. Wow, that's going to be expensive but cool.
Saw my first 2008 coin (hubby's pockets); Lincoln D so that was cool. Waiting on dollars and quarters to hit me.

It's said that dollar and half-dollar coins are more popular in places like Las Vegas and I read of certain people having a lot of luck in their area finding certain coins, so it would seem like there are certain places which are more advantageous to coin collecting, depending on what the collector is into, of course.

dahoov2........ Well I live in the exact center state in the United States (Kansas).......and 90% of what we get here comes from the Denver Mint........ALL D's ! Money does travel and one can eventually get P's but it's not that easy and you have to wait. The Denver Mint I believe supplies everything West of the Mississippi River and the Philadelphia Mint supplies everything East of that.......roughly. I could be wrong though. But yeah....I live "in the center" and WE'RE ALL D's here !  Edited by eaglefoot

I have heard, that east of the mississippi, you get p coins, and west you get d, simple as that

I cannot agree the Mississippi River is it. When I visit Chicago and Northwest Indiana, I come back with a lot of Denver coins. I also had an easier time getting Denver coins when I lived in Wisconsin, than I obviously do living in SC. IMHO, I think it is probably more of a "neutral zone" than a line. |

Living in New York, I obviously get P coins first. The one exception my entire life has been 2008--I have a nice shinny Denver Penny but nothing else!

I have a friend that lives in Arizona that keeps a eye out for all my D quarters and occasionally other coins, without here my D collections would be pretty dry.

I grew up about an hour from here. I have actually seen the 'monument' at the exact spot.  Just out in the middle of nowhere off of a dirt road... |

I noticed that this year the State Quarters were no available at any banks in my area, but you could buy them from the local shop if you wanted Denver mints. In indiana we usually only see Ps for a while and a D or two will trickle in, but it was the opposite here. The Monroe Dollars were the same way, but they were at the banks. |

Banks in Michigan get their coins from the Fed in Chicago which is on the cusp -- sometimes D, sometimes P. Of the 5 Presidential dollars so far, banks here gave me 3 D's and 2 P's.  Jan |

I live on the east side of the Mississippi from St Louis. It's very rare to find a 'D' mintmark in pocket change, unless the coin has seen some use. I sneak across the river to St Louis and meet a guy under the Arch at midnight to get my 'D' unc's. |

Jbuck........ details....details.....details ! .......Heh Heh.....yeah I was referring to the "lower 48" spot, but that's also why I said the "exact center 'STATE' ". Because Topeka,Ks. is a bit away from there, but close enough when discussing "coin distribution". LoL Ha Ha  Believe me.....we Kansans know many little facts such as these about our state! There's not a whole lot here to recognize and observe other than corn, wheat, soybeans, and cattle. Although, luckily for me, Northeast Kansas is classified as "hilly-woodlands"....lush and green with lots of creeks, rivers, ponds, lakes, woods, etc..... And as far as that "imaginary river line" ....yeah I'd agree with you, it's maybe just a "zone" or something. I once got ALL PHILLY quarters from my bank......they received boxes from there and they were even remarking how rare that was and had never seen a "shipment" from Philly before on anything. Who knows what "zones" or guidelines there are to that. I just figure the Philly mint supplies one half of the country ("roughly") and the Denver mint supplies the other half.("roughly") ............................................................................ SeatedNut....... You ever been tempted to build a raft and go Tom Sawyering down the river ? .... And St. Louis isn't probably the safest place nor midnight the safest time to be pickin' up sacks of coins ! Hee Hee......I hope yer' armed ! Probably does make a difference. I wonder if someone contacted the USMint and asked that question what kind of answer would be made up. I'm in Illinois and can never figure out what is what with what Mint on the coins. Even way back when there was S Mint coins in circulation, around here it almost appeared as if the Mint passed out coins based on the weather, traffic, size of buildings, baseball scores and/or other important subjects. One year I'm flooded with all D's, the next year all P's. Back when there was S's, same thing. No consistancy around here.

Getting away from mint marks a ninute.I live in a rural area in the east and last week searching penny rolls,20 rolls I found 23 wheat pennies.Next day 20 rolls 9 wheats .I believe thats a rather high average.
