I picked up a roll of New Hampshire transit tokens at the LCS.

Here is an example of the roll on ebay...

Here is is on Numista.

I do not have Atwood's book so I am just wondering, what is suppose to be on these tokens? Numista says it is the state seal but all I see is a)dots b)pixilated picture of an ocean c)an old man moaning.

Any idea?

That's the Old Man of the Mountain (Google it). It was a famous rock formation (on the NH quarter too). Until it fell down a few years ago.

Thank you Bstrauss3! So I was on the right track when I thought an old man was rising from a mountain. You will have to excuse my ignorance but I have heard of the "Old Man of the Mountain", it was parodied on a Simpsons episode.

I will start reading up on it on wikipedia.

Used at toll booths on 16 and 95. You'd get a small discount for using the tokens instead of quarters. Out of use for many years now.

Also, some of them had a letter punched out of them. As I recall it was the letter B. Not sure why...
