Went to a auction today and just started going through the purchases. As always, I like to buy boxes of grab bag items. Generally cheap and quite often interesting. In todays box were four coins found on "Coin Beach". This is near Indian river where it access the Atlantic in De. Two are unidentifiable but two are very interesting.

I know nothing about this coin and have not been able to reference anything in my books as they are very limited on these types of coins.

This coin I have tentatively ID as a 1786 Copper, Mailed Bust Facing Left. Found on page 58 of the 2008 Red Book. if anyone could confirm my thoughts on this and any info on the first coin would be greatly appreciated.

The first one is a 1769 1/2 Penny from Ireland (KM137). My catalog is OLD but lists this coin for $3.50 in fine, your is definitely not in F. I remember reading somewhere that the coins were minted for Ireland, but the Irish had a problem with the coins because of the King's head and they would not circulate, therefore, the coins were shipped to the colonies.

Jays-Dad is right about the identification of the first coin with the possible addition that I think it may be a contemporary counterfeit issue. The reason I say that is the odd positionin of the III. Normally regal coinage was quie good with the letters evenly spaced and all on the same arc curve but this coin with "II I" just doesn't seem right.

On the second coin if you are thinking it is a Connecticut 1786 mailed bust left I would say no. I really can't make out much of anything on the obverse but on the reverse it has the standard BRITAN NIA of a British half penny and no the INDE ET LIB of the CT coppers.

It's a 3cent Irish shilling, & if it's fully incussed, then it is a counterfit. Either way it's pretty cool, since it's an immigrated coin.
