I am considering purchasing this coin. Would you help me determine what the grade is and share your opinion on whether it has been cleaned? Thanks folks! UNC Details
Has been cleaned without a doubt to my mind, and rather harshly at that

I see slab prongs at the edges. My guess would agree with the others, AU details. Also, nasty hit on her neck. Looks like it was dipped right before being slabbed.

The coin is in a PCGS slab. I will post the third party grade later. I don't want it to color your opinions for now.

Seems like responses have died down. The coin is in a straight AU58 holder. I really like this coin even cleaned. If it was a little cheaper, I would buy it.

Ask for better pictures in case the photo washed out the luster. If not, I'd pass and wait for a specimen with full luster.

I own quite a few of these coins. I saw the listing. Here is why I would not buy. 1. The price is not right. If buyer was asking about $500 less, I would jump on it. 2. There is another listing at about a third of the price and it is non slabbed. It is a much better deal. Here it is. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1843-SEATED...AOSwXrhXmS4~3. I would buy that one and get it slabbed. Just a thought.

The thing is, this coin is 173 years old. It has no toning whatsoever.
There is an almost 100% chance that the coin has been dipped. TPGs seem to like dipping though.

Just bought one myself as well for my type set. It's at PCGS right now hopefully maybe sneak another grade or two higher out of the crossover

The PCGS "Coin Facts" retail price is $1,650 for this coin in AU-58. In order to rate that number, the coin should be REALLY nice for the grade. This coin has been dipped successfully, at least for the moment, and therefore it has a whitish color that you might like.
There are two problems with that. First, coins that have been worked on like this are out of favor right now. Collectors want "original," which might be "original now" because the coin has re-toned after it was dipped. At any rate this coin will never look "original" again in my opinion given its current look.
Second, this coin might not be stable. The slab looks to be a new "thick" PCGS holder, and the dipping may have been done recently. The new toning might be attractive, or it could come from an improper rinse after it was dipped and look horrible.
Overall I'd say the asking price is too high for the coin has it is. If this is the look you like, I'd try to find a piece in an old holder that has demonstrated that the coin is stable.
A better alternative would be to adjust your eye and think about a coin with original and original looking toned surfaces. Silver coins that are more than 170 years don't look like this unless they have been "helped."

Quote: It's at PCGS right now hopefully maybe sneak another grade or two higher out of the crossover It won't. There is obvious circulation. If they do grade it higher, then they would be wrong. I wouldn't feel comfortable having an AU coin in an MS slab. Gotta love gradeflation.
