I would think that the large number of bagmarks on liberty's head and the obverse field would preclude AU58. Looks AU50 or 53 + or CAC for eye appeal due to the impressive toning. But for the toning, it would not be an attractive coin. Definitely marketable due to color though.

They are based on the amount of remaining luster and the level of wear present on the high points. This coin has 99% luster, with very little, but obvious, wear on the high points. My pictures wash out the luster a bit, so that may be confusing. Though there are bagmarks in the areas you mention, the mottled nature of the toning created the illusion that there are more bagmarks than there actually are. I just looked under a 10x loupe. Without the wear, it would look like an MS-61/62 coin. MS-60-62 Morgans are always heavily bagmarked, so using that characteristic to determine AU or not is erroneous. I'm not trying to be critical. I am trying to help you understand the AU grades. It took me many years to figure them out.  |

On this particular coin, are the white breaks in the toning throughout the hair (particularly three lines above the eye) and in the wheat corn above the hair and liberty lettering, signs of wear? Tough to tell if those are wear or reflected light. Also some of the locks around the ear seem white at the high points. The eagle looks better in the reverse.

Darned close to the MS mark. AU-58 with only the slightest rub.
I cannot understand why so many people think that bag marks change a circulated grade. Or toning. Or, in many cases, strike. That might be true for market grading, but it has nothing to do with technical grading in ANY circulated grade.
