Hi,

Happy New Year

I found this 1897 Indian Head penny in a roll. Looks like it is a Die rotation. When I flip the coin, the die is almost 180 degrees rotated.

Is this common in Indian Head cents? Is it worth any?

Without knowing if you are an experienced collector or a beginner, I ahve to ask. When you flip the coin over are you flipping it side over or top over. Nearly all US coins have coin orientation. That means that when you flip the coin side over it is supposed to be rotated 180 degrees. If you want to post photos of a rotated die, you could yry one of two things. Place the coin in a 2x2 and staple it in. Then take pics of both sides. Or yoi could get a picture with a mirror close behind so that the front of the coin is visible and the back is also visible in the mirror.
Rest in Peace

Certainly appears to have some rotation. Indian cent collectors love all types of errors so this would have value if it's more than 30% off, which I believe is considered within the tolerance range.

I am flipping the coin top over not side over. I compared this with other coins as well just to make sure I am flipping the right way. It is definitely die rotation. I am not sure if it is common for old coins.

Thanks,

Thanks moxking! How much value does this kind of error coin have? Is it worth getting this graded?

This is the first time I am seeing this kind of die rotation error.

This is more commonly seen in early date IHCs. The grade of the coin is rather low (looks like a solid VG), and even in early dates, a die rotation doesn't command much of a premium. This is one of those premium values that depends on the collector. On ebay, I would estimate you could get $5-$20. I have had successful sales in those same price ranges.

Thanks Everyone for your input. I will pass on grading this as it is not worth that much.

Appreciate your support on this!
