I was just given my dad's coin collection. Or what's left of it. He started selling it off a while back and then gave what was left to my uncle for safe keeping when my mom and dad moved. My dad died before he could get the coins back. My uncle said my dad sold all the most valuable and key coins, but it's priceless to me! My uncle gave them to me tonight (along with my dad's stamp collection). There are 41 coins in all about half of which are silver dollars, all Morgan's except two Peace dollars (guess I officially doubled my Peace dollar collection) and three Canadian silver dollars. There is one small gold coin that my uncle told me was bullion and the rest are proofs of various quarters, dimes, and nickels. There is also a really cool, old Half Cent. I looked it up and it's the braided hair one but it's so worn you can't make out the year. I owe my uncle a big thank you! I told him thank you, but I intend to send a gift too. A token. He sat with me for a long time talking about how coins are graded and such. He showed me some of his coins too. He sold most of his coins too, but we had fun looking at them. I'm going to try to post pictures of some of the coins but I'm using my phone so I don't know how well it will work. Happy new year! Edited by jillabean 12/31/2016 9:34 pm

Looks like I will have to wait until I am home to share pictures. I can't seem to load most of them or use the optimizer on my phone.

I would keep those coins forever because it belonged to your father. That makes them priceless to you.

If your Braided Hair Half Cent is this design, it is actually rare in very low grade. Don't get excided. Rare in this case does not translate into any sort of collector value. The design was issued from 1840 until 1857, but they were only made for circulation from 1849 until 1857. Half Cents were never popular with the public and later ones saw very little circulation. As a result is it unusual to see one in less than Very Fine or even Extremely Fine condition (very light wear). One that has been worn down to barely recognizable is a rare item indeed, but it's usually not worth anything.
