I almost missed my chance to bid on the 1849 dollar I really wanted. But in my rush I accidently hit the bid button on this seated liberty.

Do you guys think it's worth keeping?

Call Al Pinkall at Heritage. Normally, there are no returns for Signature Auctions, but when you spend as much as you are spending, they may make some accomodations.

2 problems with the coin - Details grade and the ton of nicks on the obverse and reverse.

It has decent eye appeal for a cleaned coin and the level of marks isn't too bad. You need to decide whether the coin will satisfy in your collection. I prefer to stay away from problem coins in general; you will usually find it more difficult to sell them in the future.

Heritage may agree to cancel the bid if you explain your mistake. Worth a try!

Everyone knows how I would rate this, so I'd give the return effort a try as quickly as possible. I'd hate to own a coin I'd bought accidentally.

Yes, see if they're willing to cancel your bid. If not, offer to put it up for auction with them or simply sell through another venue. You shouldn't lose too much by either option.

I spoke with Al today, and he said he would see what he can do. Also he wanted to get it to the return dept before they 'got out of there'. I just checked and now I don't see it in my bid history. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the up-the-ladder recommendation! I was getting nowhere with the girls who answered the phones.

One of dealers at FUN told me a similar story. He was bidding on a very expensive coin that sold for 6 figures. He bidding in the auction on Heritage Live and was out at $140,000. As he was getting up from the table he pushed down in the wrong place and executed a bid for $240,000. He contacted Heritage and was able to get the coin sold to the under bidder at that person's high bid, but I'd say he was lucky. Usually you obligated to honor your bids.

Wow. There is a way to disable live bidding which I use whenever I am looking at lots go down on Heritage Live on my phone so I don't butt-dial myself into buying something I did not intend. When the 1804 dollar was going down, I was looking at Stacks live and I'm sure glad I didn't accidentally hit something when standing up. That would have been an interesting conversation to have with the wife.
