Hello everyone... unlike probably most people on here, I'm not actually a coin collector. I came on here from something I found out from my father today.

My father was born in the 40s, and apparently when he was kid, he stumbled upon a coin he thought was pretty rare and cool back then. He bought it and has held onto it ever since, forgetting about it for a long time. Meanwhile he's never really known what he had. Well today, he brings it up to me because he's nearing retirement and figured he may be able to get something for it. Anyways, he says it is a 1974 Silver Dollar which, with a quick google search, I come to find is extremely valuable. Now, I have no clue whether it is real or not or what kind of condition it is in. I will try to get pictures up when he shows it to me tonight.

Anyways, I have absolutely no clue about anything related to coin collecting. I came on here to hopefully get some advice from you all about how to go about getting this coin appraised and whatnot. Any advice would be extremely helpful, thank you!

Did you mean 1874 silver dollar? That would be a US Trade dollar. hopefully that is what you meant to write seeing as he bought long ago.

Once you post the photo's we can help you determine what you have.

My mistake, dyslexia got me there. I meant a 1794 silver dollar. Any ideas on whether or not this is actually real? I had my doubts when my Dad told me what he had and to look it up online, but who knows.

Here are pictures:

After looking at it in detail, it looks like the feathers on the eagle are the incorrect shape. Knew it had to be too good to be true!

It might still be silver so it could be worth whatever the spot price is.

Sorry that your father bought a fake. The fakes are bad for the hobby but an unfortunate reality.
