Huh...someone bid $5,034.66 essentially sight-unseen with a pic like that?
It looks like a 1858 LD with the "8" cut--the other lettering doesn't resemble the type of 1856. Smart.

Besides the date, here are a few other things to look for on an 1856 which the usual forgeries don't get right.
For 1856 style lettering, compare how elongated the center serifs on "E" and "F" are--so much they touch the upper portions of those letters. And, if you compare the O in "OF", note how the letter is a bit broader, with a rectangular inner shape? Then look at that ebay coin.

Someone stands to lose much money.

I look at it this way - why trust an auction when the seller doesn't even take the time to write a decent description or spell the title correctly?

Why do people buy rare coins from ebay? I wouldn't touch an expensive coin from ebay for any reason.

I'll never understand how anyone can discern enough about any coin from pictures to get an accurate grade, or verification of authenticity. I'll buy coins for $10 or $20 bucks based on a photo, but never any higher value coin. I think it's foolish. Enough people get "lucky" buying on ebay to keep it going, but just as many get burned. How many people will admit to getting burned on a $5000 coin buy?

That is a definite fake. The 5 in 1856 is wrong (The bulge at the tail of the 5 should stick out more). The "O" in OF is too round, the inside opening should be squarish.

I bought my 1856 FE from ebay, but it was ANACS certified and I had a few experts look at it before I bid.

I'm going thru this guy's previous sales and I can't find a real one in the bunch.

Most of them are intentionally blurry pictures.
