The RCC is not a moderated newsgroup and anyone can post OT threads. And yet if a coin related thread lasts long enough it almost always goes off on some wild tangent.

That is a combination of a lack of moderation and a lack of a true GD section on rcc, in my opinion. In a moderated web forum such as this, if topics are split to a new topic when they go off on a sustained tangent, that kind of stuff just doesn't happen.

Really, that is my thought with the concern about politics and nasty discussions erupting in a general discussion forum. If the moderators don't want that to happen, it doesn't happen. Period.

I don't have an RCC moderator. Could you show me how to make one from a rock and an icecream stick?

Perhaps your right about moderators. But it still seems to me that even moderators lighten up on enforcment sooner or later rather than get worn down. And the beat goes on.

Just to show you big brother is watching

My killfile is my moderator on RCC.

You are certainly right that moderators can get worn down as a forum grows. It happens most often when a forum does not add moderators as the frequency of posts increases or if the owner mostly much abandons the forum.

If a consitent tone is set early on, though, it is easier to maintain in the long run but it always requires some 'hands on' care to keep it going in the direction you desire. Forums are not fire and forget.

True dat. The forum I just left currently has more than 40 moderators between the various subfora. There is remarkably little turnover as a result - perhaps half a dozen over almost 7 years. My job as moderator of the sale/trade forum left me in such frequent contact with the dregs of humanity (even among highly intelligent, upper-demographic populations there are plenty of thieves) that I burned out, much like a police office might.

I struggled with this question, especially after reading ND's and others about the topics and noticed those opposed had the longest and most replies. I finally decided to play it neutral and voted for I don't care one way or the other. My simple logic is, I don't have to go in there and read the garbage if it turns out to be a garbage topic. Altho most members in this forum get along great, & most are very mature if you will, I don't see how a GD area will make us enemies either, no matter the subject. My only concerns would be for the young folks. And by that I mean those under say 13. You would be surprised what the young people already know, a place like a GD could pollute there thought processes even more and that would not be good. So I am on the fence. Either way, this forum will still be my primary place to go come hell or high water..

We already use the 'Main Coin Forum' as a general discussion area and as long as we can continue to do so then we wouldn't need a separate GD. That would keep everyone happy.

Hi all,
I like CC as it is. As Shatsi points out, we use the MCF as a general discussion forum as it is-folks put in points about personal circumstances, the weather, etc. Every so often a hint of politics or religion wafts by. And things work well. But even here, we've seen some of our online friends get upset or offended, sometimes even about coins. I don't want to see what happens elsewhere with folks getting bent out of shape-the sorts of things that would never happen if two folks are talking face to face can happen all too easily in the absence of all those social cues we take for granted in our offline life.

I remain neutral.

However, I would say this. I think many of our members are highly intelligent people (Maybe all of them!). Therefore, how difficult is it to just not make use of the new section if opposed to it? How would it harm those opposed if they don't deal with it?

I would participate, but wouldn't have any love loss if the site stayed the way it is.

Maybe it is my imagination or just the time of year but it seems the coin forum has been kind of filled with other type topics lately.

Edited to add: Maybe people could put an OT: or GD: in their non-coin subjects to help out a bit?

I noticed that same thing, Stu. I definitely feel that an opt-in General Discussion section is the answer. We would have had it already, but I simply haven't had the energy to take care of it. By the end of the first week of the New Year (hopefully before) we'll have an opt-in section. Members who don't opt in will not even be able to see the section, so the people who didn't want one won't have to worry about being tempted to look at it.

Tell me about it. I moderate a site with 23,000+ Members. Myself along with 3 other mods, mod the busiest forum, "free for all". It's were all off topic threads go. Along with that forum, I moderate 3 other forums within that one site. It's consumes me. lol. I come here for a break away from the crazyees. I think in all, we have maybe 30 mods+/-.
