Poll Question
I am starting to think that it may be time for a General Discussion (non-coin) Section here at CC. I would like to see how everyone feels about this. Please vote and then post comments if you have any. Remember that you have to vote before posting as the vote capability is wiped out once you post. Thanks, everyone. Results

I have been involved with general discussions, most recently in Coin Talk, and quite frankly there are to many people in the world looking for such places to spread their agenda and hate. I would rather continue just as we are and if we must discuss something out of the coin realm we can use PM if we must. Don't take my word for anything, just go to Coin Talks general gossip, er I mean discussion and see what one must put up with and it is VERY easy to get sucked in to those discussions when you have narrow minded, self centered, self appointed saints demanding the world live by their views and agenda. Please don't do it here as I come here to be with friends, coin collectors, coin dealers and my second FAMILY!

So far, this is the response I expected. I noticed a couple of threads that were computer-related rather than coin-related and it put this idea in my head. I expect that most of the members feel the way you all do. I just felt that it was worth bringing to the group for an opinion.

I voted I would paticipate,, I have never felt obliged to voice my opinion or to listen to the opinions of the zealots of the world,,
I can see Terrys point and I respect it as well as ND's,, But in reality there is no pressure to post responses or to participate in any topic in such a forum.

Thank you ageka for your response. Now Metalman I tend to disagree. After reading a few posts, that you probably shouldn't have read in the first place, the old blood gets to boiling and I find myself defending those under attack or the one sided views being presented. The only thing left to do is to waste my time responding to those narrow minded views, and I don't know why, as I am only fueling the argument as individuals who CAN'T compromise or see both sides are not going to bend regardless of what is posted. I guess I realize that many things are as they are today because most good men remain silent and do nothing. It is bad enough, at times, when we clash over coins or collecting habits so I would prefer we keep it there as I could never hate you for collecting something I despise but could learn to place a lot of distance between you, as well as other friends, over such topics as government, politics, religion, gays, lesbians, taxes, corruption, crime, welfare, the KKK and on and on and on! I would rather come here to meet with coin collecting friends and yes, ageka, we can discuss a little cooking if you like but to provide a specific forum to vent or spread an agenda, well, I am NOT comfortable with that as it wouldn't take me but a few posts on certain subjects before MOM would have me sitting in the corner!!! Basically put I am wide open, accepting, and believe we all have the right to live or own lives in any way we chose as long as it doesn't hurt or interfer with the lives of others. Words can cut like a knife and they also can misinterpreted very easily so I still say STAY like we are!

I would say sometimes, Firstly because we do coins here not chatting. Secondly, Its basically as ND says Chatting is for emails.

As I stated Terry I respect your opinion, The poll was put up as a way for Susan to see and hear opinions, I posted mine, but I wont be disappointed if the Forum stays just as it is !!!
Im not pushing for an open forum nor did I concieve the Idea of one !!
I avoid political, Religous, and other topics that tend to bring emotional responses to the surface as a rule, I do that because I'm passionate about my views on these topics and could easily lose my self control that Ive struggled to achieve.
So if it came to actual vote I would also probly vote no !!
having said that I also feel funny sometimes posting OT responses on the coin forum ?
Thanks for your input Terry !!

I did not post this because there is a problem with occasionally posting non-coin topics in the coin forum. I was just wondering if a need had arisen for a separate section for it. I'm leaning towards just leaving things as they are.

I voted for it, but when you say "General Discussion" does that mean it could be about anything?

Yes, but would still need to remain family-friendly and would be moderated.

I just happened to look at such a "general discussion" section, for the first time, on another coin forum. And, I actually contributed a post to it.
I am of two minds about the idea. First, such a section can be most interesting. I know I found my experience there interesting. On the other hand, much of what I read was bitter, "in your face" verbal abuse between members.
The only other time I experienced that sort of thing was my first attempt to join a forum, and that was a baseball forum which, as it turned out, didn't deal with baseball, but with filth that players were suppoesedly involved with.
So, either way is fine with me. If you add such a section, those who don't like it, don't need to spend time there. On the other hand, this is a wonderful coin forum, and I wouldn't want to see anything detract from it.

I voted for it because:
1) No one has anything to fear from the opinions of others. And no one's opinion obligates anyone else to believe it, or for that matter to even listen to it.
2) I'v yet to see a thread on any board that, if it lasted long enough, didn't go off on a tangent anyway.
I do however have *major* reservations about it generating bad feelings among collectors. As it is now everyone can be pals reguardless of their political beliefs as long as everyone keeps their political beliefs to themselves.
I don't know about the other countries that post in here but discussing politics or religion in America is a total waste of bandwidth. There is no "compromise" or "discourse" in politics right now, hasn't been for decades. There is only total polarization. Side "A" does not have to convince others from side "A" and they are not even going to convince side "B" of anything. And vice-versa, so what's the point? All so called discussions in politics simply reinforce polarization. If someone here has some "urgent" agenda, I say let 'em take out into the street. That's where it's all going anyway.

At age 59 I still do not care about politics and will avoid any opinion ( most politicians will fill their pockets IMVHO ) officially I have the same salary as a government minister but I do not have a condo in the south of France Also on religion I do not have any feelings left after I saw the evidence that the pope helped some nazis escape to south america [:0] I only get into trouble on two accounts I hate people pretending they are specialists on something they hardly know anything about ( after 8 years of university I can smell them out in minutes chem engineer and MBA ) And I hate people getting paid big money who try to benefit from my market view on gold and shares and inflation and anything other So me and my friend decided to keep that information between the two of us So I had rather talk about grading and conservation of coins and cooking then anything else

I think you can probably guess that I think it is a good idea. It can greatly Add to the 'community' feel and yet get the clutter out of the coin forums. But, I think you need to keep the tone the same as the rest of the forums. There is another forum that recently added a GD area and it is about 180 degrees out in regards to the moderation that goes on in the rest of the site. Things can get a little out of hand and less family friendly in that scenario.
Edited to add: An Opt-In method is the way I think it is best implemented if possible because that allows those that don't want anything to do with it to never see it. But that is just the way I did it all when I was running a forum.
