I voted sometimes
In the Australian forum
There is a Chin Wag area
Everything is discussed
Sports- politics- birdflu- can whales swallow humans etc.

It is a place to ask a question that is not related to coins tokens and banknotes.

It is monoitored just like the rest of the forum and the conversations are very interesting

Edited to add: An Opt-In method is the way I think it is best implemented if possible because that allows those that don't want anything to do with it to never see it. But that is just the way I did it all when I was running a forum.

That can actually be done here now. In the heading of every forum, (the dark blue section) all the way on the left you will see a "-" sign. If you click on that, the section under it will go away, then change to a "+" sign. The forum cookie will remember your settings until you clear your cookies.

I dunno, could be interesting. If someone wanted to talk about the Colts or Cubs or Nascar I'd be all for that! I could also go for a cooking discussion (anyone want a good cheesecake recipie? ) or pets or whatever. I know I have a tendency to send some threads off in another direction, so this might be a fun place for me! Just leave the politics out of it!

Metalman, I having nothing but respect for you and a great number of other fine collectors on this forum so I suppose, deep inside, I would rather protect that at all costs than risk alienating myself from anyone here over something stupid that really didn't belong here in the first place. Everyone knows we can and do stray WAY off topic many times and we, on occassion, really poke some fun at each other and I find it ALL very pleasant! We have a great group and Lord knows I like to discuss issues but I am well aware of the fact when someone starts PREACHING their agenda I won't leave till I have had my say and I would rather not go there! I wrote a column for a local newspaper for a few years and I found out then it only takes ONE word interpreted wrong by the wrong individual and Katy Bar the DOOR as all H--- is going to break loose. Finally had to have my phone unlisted after some "not so nice guy" exploded because he didn't know what ANTICS meant? Go figure! I just want to come here for all the right reasons and protect what I have found!

I have been Sports Editor of our local newspaper for 38 years. I have been very fortunate, over those years, to have received very, very few complaints. However, when I do, I simply reply, "Then, don't read it!"

Wouldn't that apply to a new section as the one proposed?

Also, I'd like to give Kyra a hard time when my Broncos beat the Colts, or my Rockies beat the Cubs.

I am not at all surprised at how the voting has ended up at this point. I think it probably shows that this is a community as well as a coin forum.

So, either way is fine with me. If you add such a section, those who don't like it, don't need to spend time there. On the other hand, this is a wonderful coin forum, and I wouldn't want to see anything detract from it.

I would agree with Gary on this issue, and have voted in this manner. I voted it a draw and will let cooler heads make that decision. What ever it is I can live with it.
I would also like to say that Terry has some very strong points for not wanting to see this forum become another CT. As some of you know I visit the other forum and contribute my share of confusion and distrust among the troops, just to see where the dust will settle. When you are my age you take your fun where ever you can find it.
So Susan it looks like its all up to you, and good luck!

BRONCO's beat the COLTS!!! Excuse me while I finish rolling on the floor with laughter. Now, thats better! It seems that thin mountain air must be making you folks just a little light headed? Slow down and breath deep and things will start coming back to you! Don't give a hoot about baseball since the strike before the last strike but find myself kind of headstrong when it comes to the NFL. I was a Cowboy fan for years and years but the Colts have finally won me over. Notice I have quit referring to them as the DOLTS! Got something going here so let me enjoy it while we can and I am not referring to the new stadium we are building because the other one is so old (25 years)! Get back with me Gary, should Denver and the Colts have a rematch as I am sure there is a coin or two we could lay on the line in a friendly bet. It wouldn't kill me to loose either as I have lost so many bets on bad teams I am used to it. It is just strange to finally have a team to actually MAYBE win a bet on. For what it is worth I have not bet on the Colts for the last 2 years as I figure when I do they will get stomped and my losing streak will continue as usual!!! Honestly I think ALL professional sports figures are over paid and over pampered and it has ruined the opportunity for the average citizen to ever see a game again, let alone, take the whole family.

Darn, I believe somehow I managed to get off topic! Excuse me but this is exactly the point I have been trying to make! We come and go but always remain civil and eventually make it back to the topic at hand. An open discussion area pretty much creates an atmosphere that is intolerable all the time, at least for someone, regardless what the topic is. I like this much better!

Yes, but would still need to remain family-friendly and would be moderated.

Well, this thread so far is like a demo. But I'm with most here, the politics do need to be banned.

Terry:

In a way, you made a good argument for an open forum!

However, it matters not to me one way or the other.

Boy, do I agree with you on the spoiled athletes. Heard a story the other day about some young millionaire who came to the U.S. to play baseball. Bought something like 50 expensive cars his first year, and when asked why, he replied he didn't know what else to do with the money. Right! And, people are starving to death.

Then, I think it was on CNN, the story about the girls and how they are out to hook a pro athlete. When interviewed thay confessed that although they hadn't married one yet, they had received expensive cars as gifts and were six figures richer than before they started extending favors to the athletes.

I have loved the Yankees since 1948, but is A-Rod worth $248 million?

The whole situation is obscene. Roger Clemens makes more for pitching one inning than I have managed to save in a lifetime.

Hey, maybe I just made a good argument for an open forum!?

Oh, yes, when the Broncos and Colts meet again, let's do make a little coin wager.

Broncos and Colts
Oh yes those are "grid iron teams
Maybe some day the yanks will learn to play real football (no padding)

OR maybe some day the US mint will make some really nice new coins.
Now we are back on topic

Which is the dream football in America with no padding (i.e. Aussie rules)

or the mint comming up with some really nice collectable coins (i.e. similar to the many wonderfuld darkside coins from around the world [ and you thought I was only going to say Australia]

The only REAL football is played right here in the NFL! Soccer, well, you don't want to know where I stand with that one.
Now the U.S. government and U.S. mint take great pride in NEVER producing high quality, detailed, high relief coins, even when producing non-circulating coins that will never be touched by human hands. The only thing that is really important by Congressional standards is producing constant coinage to glorify politicians of the U.S. and for the most part, just a few other ROYAL Americans are constantly remembered and commemorated. Whos coming up AGAIN? Ben Franklin? Abe Lincoln? Of course we have special interest groups begging for funds from some really stupid ideas on the agenda so never mind our struggling National Park System and God forbid we ever pay tribute to our wildlife, other nature, natural wonders or senic beauty. Same old, same old and it will take a major shift in who we put in Congress to stop the c**p such as the Presidential dollar series and the outlandish Spouses in Gold. Our chances in getting real change with real designs are about as slim as the Colts winning the Super Bowl! And even then that WON'T do a darn thing to better anyones life in Indiana but the important thing is we could afford a new stadium to keep our boys cozy and warm and contiune to pump money into THEIR system under the guise of entertainment.

They were advised by the CCAC that they were missing the boat by not putting out more mint medals, especially wildlife medals. The mint can come up with good stuff if they want to. But as long as collectors marvel over pretty packaging that's what they'll get.

I believe they did in the beginning. Back when they had the flying wedge. OldDan probably remembers that one. I think there were some problems though like "sudden death" in the literal sense.
