Here is a 1896 raw Indian Head cent that I took a chance on and bought. I keep going back and forth between high AU to low MS. I know it has a few dings on the obverse, one on the chin and another on the lower cheek. The "scars" gives the princess a rugged look. Thanks in advance.   |

Going to say 58 but even tho reverse has some luster, too much wear on ribbon and leaf tips drops to 55 and obverse is a 55 with the hits, wear and carbon spots. Stil fairly nice, if you don't want it...   |

AU58RB. Still has enough red to go RB. Nice coin. Many people would rather have a choice AU than a low MS.

I'm one of those that like AU grades, although in this case I would not have minded a low MS. From the responses, I feel a bit better about having such a hard time grading this one. Crazy, you keyed in on what I thought was slight wear, but I wasn't sure. Think I'll say AU-55/AU-58 for my spreadsheet. It'll be a nice hole filler for my Dansco album. Even with the dings and carbon spots, it's not a bad looking IHC for being raw. |

That's very close to mint state so, I'll say MS-60

i think at worst AU58 at best MS62. red appears to be greater than 5% so it would warrant RB designation imo if it is mint state. Quote:
