Well I came up with a new contest. At least I think it is a new idea. The prize is a Bicentennial
Ike dollar. Not a big prize but maybe someone would like it for a type set or a starter for child or niece/nephew.
1st the story...I found a common 1941
Wheat cent while metal detecting a couple weeks ago. It was nasty, dirty you name it. It looked like it was definitely dropped near its mint date.
So I decided to experiment on it to see what the effects of different cleaning techniques are. So here is a pic. It went through an extensive 9 step cleaning and artificial toning process. Only hint - initial and in between water rinsing and drying were not considered steps and some steps were repeated.
Now the contest:- 1 entry per member.
- No Edits
- guess 9 steps that you think this poor coin went through.
- contest ends Wed 12 Noon Eastern Standard.
- The guess with the most correct steps wins.
- In case of a tie, whoever had the steps in the closest order to
how they were performed wins.
Disclaimer: Only one
Wheat penny was harmed in the making of this contest. Abuse done for educational purposes to help prevent future
ebay mistakes by myself in the purchase of copper coins. Main lesson beware of pink pennies and 2 cents.

THE RESULTS
So the steps taken to get this penny back to MS-60 on the
ebay scale:
1. Dish soap and water
2. Brushed with Toothbrush
3. Soaked in Olive Oil
4. Soaked in Vinegar and Salt
5. Rubbed with Baking Soda
6. Applied Brasso
7. Polished with Dremel tool
8. Heated for toning
9. Re Soaked in Vinegar & Salt to tone down the toning.
And the results as judged by me
