I posted this with some other clips a while back but, I'm revisiting it with some questions. It weighs 2.2g so, by weight, I estimate it to be a 12% clip. My questions:

What, if anything, can be done about the spots (tarnish?)?

If the pics are good enough, what would you grade it and do you think it's FB (FSB)?

What do you think of value?

I can tell due to the jagged edge of the clip that this is PMD with some sort of blade.

@josephm99

What specifically makes you come to that conclusion? I don't see a "jagged edge."

I've been looking at MS70 for a while and just bought some. I have at least one test subject that could benefit before I try it with this coin.

It's always good to know the products and what they can and cannot do or what they will do that you don't want!

Why isn't the clip the same shape as a coin?

I agree with aristarchus, because the clip is not the same size as part of a coin, which, if it were legitimate, it should be.

NVM I did not remember that the metal could change shape after being clipped.

I disagree with the other posters, clipped planchets can come in all shapes and all sizes: http://www.error-ref.com/crescent-curve-clips/

The blakesly effect is clearly visible and quite strong, however i'd like to see a low angle shot of the clip from both sides if you can get one, if it is in fact a genuine clip, there shouldnt be any metal flow up and around the edge of the clip.

The clip will not always maintain the curvature of a coin after the planchet is struck. There is nothing to control the flow of the planchet metal so it is not uncommon to see some distortion of the curvature. This coin has a very prominent Blakesley Effect, the rim is tapered, and metal flow is present on AM as you would expect to see on a genuine incomplete(clipped) planchet.

100% legit clip, no question about it.
As Adam and Biokemist stated, the blakesley effect is very strong.

Very nice coin!

as well.. Lets not jump to conclusions guys and gals. The example clearly exhibits the blakesly and looks good. As for the tarnish, some sort of silver solution. Id say test out a few regular ones with similar toning that you got for melt or close to that way if it goes bad then you can break even. Then use the dip that works best.

Thanks everyone for the input!

Looking at the pics, I realize that all of those spots makes it really difficult to grade (plus the pics could be better). I'll see what I can do about the tarnish. Normally, I wouldn't mess with it but, it's pretty ugly!

Anyway, since Adam_E asked, here are some more pics of the clip. I was using a macro clip-on lens so, there's no way to get the whole thing in focus at once.

Nice pictures, they clearly show the thin grainy line under the thicker smooth line, that's the breakaway zone, the part of the planchet that gets torn away as opposed to being cut. Definitely a genuine clip that got distorted from the strike

Thanks for that explanation. I was wondering about that thinner "grainy" line on the clipped edge.

Thank you for the additional photos. They make this a great learning thread.

By the way, if Coop asks to use them, you say yes.
