Just looking for advise I would like to own a Godless Presidential dollar. Looking at ebay I seen slabbed ones for hundreds and some "just outa the roll" for very little. Not big on the slabs so that doesn't matter to me and only really need a nice uncirculated not looking for MS-69 or MS-70 so outa the roll ok to me too. Why such a price discrepency? Is there fakes to look out for? I was thinking about it and prob not too hard for pro's to fake the smooth rim.

Thanks in advance I know you guys know your stuff so figured id start here and learn lesson the easy way instead of end here with posts having learned the hard way.

purchasing a presidential coin with no edge lettering that is not slabed is very risky because the edge lettering is easily ground off. The safest way to get one of these is to buy one that has been certified. That is the reason for the big jump in price

The "just outa the roll" pieces are likely to really be "just offa the lathe".

Thanks so much for the quick replies. I am so lucky to have found this site because before coming here I would certainly have bought an uncertified one. Since reading all of the counterfeit posts on this site I was suspicious. Man those certified ones already jumping up in price :)

And can't buy rolls cause I know the ebayer's roll their own too :)

If the edge is sanded, you can tell it has been faked if you know what to look for- it is not a fool-proof forgery. The problem is that you would actually have to examine the coin in hand to discern those differences. If you are buying from a picture(such as ebay) it is best to purchase certified. You can also purchase a raw coin from trusted dealers, http://www.fredweinberg.com/ is one and he has raw Washingtons for $50.

I would suggest looking at the price difference in the grading as well. I think there will be very few coins in the series that will grade MS65 and above since they seem so easily nicked and bag marked at the mint. It may be worth paying an extra $15 now for a MS68 as opposed to an MS65 (graded by a reputable company, of course).

I haven't looked at the pricing on these (so the above is just an example), but it's worth tracking to get a feel for what the market is at before buying and what the premium in grade levels is at.

Good luck!
