Yes I do. Coins are an addiction. End of story. I should usally be saving up for my next big purchase in the shield series yet I always find some random that I need.

Most of my duplicates are purchased late on weekend evenings..... my wife affectionately calls them my "Jack Daniels" collections.... I hate that term....

Occasionally I do, but rarely do I do it deliberately. But then, as a collector with a very broad field of interest (if it was used as money somewhere, somewhen, and fits into a 2x2, I'll take it) I've got a lot further to go before I come anywhere near running out of "holes" that are of interest to me. I usually don't get that many duplicates although I would like to "upgrade" some items in my collection/hoard. Unfortunately I am easily distracted and move on to the next thing once I feel I have completed a series/set to a degree I am comfortable with (yep, I'll never have that 1928 Peace dollar *sniff*  ). As far as financial ruin I am more focused on my monthly budget (fiscal month, that is), which I am always way over within the first two weeks. I constantly am in a nervous fret my S.O. will notice the amount I am *investing*  in coins and put an end to it. And yes, you need another 1865 3CN and more Unc Morgans (when the lady winks at you, what else can you do?)  . |

I really dont buy too many Dupes,but,since I started collecting (hoarding)Older world stuff,I do buy holed coins,sometimes This is the only way I can get a certain coin

I try not to buy duplicates, but it does happen. Sometimes it's because I don't have my want list in front of me and other times it's because I just like the coin. And Jack Daniels has been known to play a role in some purchases  . The trouble is, once they're in my collection, the dupes are there to stay. I just can't seem to part with them. This is going to be a problem if I ever try to upgrade some of the coins I bought when I was a kid. Then again, the money is long spent and I've having fun so who cares! |

I have been known to keep a coin I found, even if I already have it, just because of its date or condition. I don't think I have ever intentionally bought a duplicate, but I accidentally bought one when I misread my list one time! And the funny thing is, I was thinking to myself "I thought I bought this one at the last show?"  quote:

I can sympathize! Even though I might have found better coins, I have a difficult time deciding to upgrade. I think I get more enjoyment knowing that I have had a coin more than twenty years, than I would upgrading to the best I can find. The very few times I have managed to do it, I moved the original coin to my special miscellaneous album! I just cannot part with them! |

Good topic for me Prethen, it's the exact reason I have put myself in coin purchasing "time-out". I am reorganizing my collection and making a shopping list of sorts. Just like grocery shopping, if I don't have a list when I get to the store, I buy what I want, when I get home I have nothing I need. I am sure I'll still splurg now and then, but have set a goal to complete a couple sets. My husband keeps threatin to send posters of me to the coin shops in the area that says,"If you see this woman next to your bargin bin, please remove her from the store". I buy most of my coins off of ebay. I tend to purchase medium size lots that contain multiple coins and I specifically target sellers that don't specialize in coins. I also tend to look in categories other than "Coins"... you'd be amazed at how many coins are listed in categories other than the obvious. Anyway... I might buy a lot of 20 coins because in that lot there is 1 that I want. As such I end up with lots and lots of duplicates. In general duplicates get thrown in my "stuff to sell on ebay" pile. Because I'm fairly picky on what I'm bidding on and fairly stingy on the max amount I'll pay for a lot, I generally end up being able to sell the stuff individually out of the lot and make a pretty good profit. Not enough to write home about, but enough to make it worth while. i do all the time!its only for investment.i paid 10 cents each on before 1930 coins and get my money back and then some!right now I have 4 1937 d bu red lincoln pennies o wait I got 5 of them not counting the one in my book.(came in that 200.00 deal.i think I stil got 40 1932 d pennies!and yes I hoard some dates.any extra 1933 d pennies you want to get rid of?check my topic about hoarding dates and why. https://goccf.com/t/29365Edited by toniblab

I hardly buy a coin that would be a duplicate unless to upgrade but I always find myself buying coins that doesn't belong in my collections.

I don't deliberately buy duplicates other than to upgrade but it does happen on occasion, usually when I'm browsing a coin shop and forgot my wantlist.
Some of the coins I have in type sets are technically duplicates of coins I have in date/year sets, but I don't consider them such.

I never thought of them as duplicates either. But you are correct, a lot of my 7070 coins have a doppelgänger in another Dansco! |

You know......I don't see "duplicates" as a "bad thing" or something to shy away from......you can always create new albums or have a "trove" of xtra's !
